Math: Mathematicians were flexible this week! Mathematicians began to work with skip jumping to add numbers quickly. Skip jumping is when you start at one number and increase/decrease by known chunks (10s, 5s, 2s, 1s). For example: 8 + 12 skip jumped could be 8 + 10 = 18 + 2 = 20. Seeing numbers as component parts helps us be more flexible with our number sense. Students also began using an online math program called Dreambox. This tool is adaptive and responds to children in the moment as they work through lessons.

Writer’s Workshop: Second grade writers were editors this week! We learned how to use an editing checklist to support our use of language conventions. When we are editing, we focus solely on language conventions. Second graders also began to think about revising with intent. Purposeful revision will be the next bend of our small moment unit.

Word Study: In word study, students practiced applying spelling patterns for glued sounds, closed syllables, and bonus letters. We took our post unit check in. These will be in our home school folders next week.

Reader’s Workshop: Second grade readers began a new unit this week… Reading Growth Spurts! Students began working with the core ideas:

  • Readers choose what they are going to read and how they are going to read.

  •  Readers give their book a sneak peek to decide how the book wants to be read.

Theme: We began our Second Step curriculum! Second Step is a researched based social emotional learning/well-being program adopted by our K- 4 a few years ago. This program explicitly teaches four units: skills for learning, empathy, emotion management and problem solving. This week, we began our work on skills for learning. Students learned how to be strong listeners. We learned that to listen actively we should have our eyes watching, ears listening, voice quiet, body still. We call these ‘listening rules.’

Workboard - We are becoming very independent with our Workboard routines! Workboard is a time of day where students independently work through routines & activities that support their learning. This time is to practice the skills we have been working on. We work very hard for students to feel empowered during this time. Second graders ask each other when they need help instead of the teacher. Workboard allows the teacher an opportunity to work with small groups or individual students. This is a great time for all students to be meaningfully engaged in work while teachers can provide more explicit instruction to small groups and individuals.
