11.20.2020

Reminders:
  • No school Monday, November 23 - Friday, November 27
  • Please remember to follow the expectations outlined by the VT DOH at all times. We want your children to be able to continue to be together, in person. This will take each and everyone of us to make this happen.
  • Please remember that we try to go outside everyday. Support your children to have weather appropriate clothing and footwear.

Math: This week, mathematicians worked to estimate, count, and compare numbers. Second graders are working hard to understand place value using ones, tens, and hundreds. In your child’s home school folder you will find materials for new math games called ‘Place Value Showdown' and 'Count and Compare Twos.' We are asking students to cut out and organize these materials to keep in their math toolkits. This is a fun opportunity for you to play with your child! These are wonderful games to practice important second grade math concepts. Please continue to support your child with practice telling time and determining elapsed time!

Writing: This week, writers shared their writing with  a small group of classmates. Sharing our writing helps us celebrate the craft moves we are trying, reiterates the importance of revising and editing with intent, and allows us to learn from each other. Writers took time to review their second grade narrative writing checklist and to set a goal for the next, and final, bend in our narrative writing unit. We also worked on how to upload our writing and record our voices using Seesaw. We hope you enjoyed your child’s work!

Word Study: Second graders continued to work with base words and suffixes. We are working hard to spell words with all of the patterns we have learned and add the suffixes: -s, -es, -ed, -ing, -er, -est accurately. This week’s new snap words were: sure, used, use. Please support your child to write in complete sentences, using their best handwriting. As second graders, we should be starting a sentence with a capital letter and accurately applying end punctuation.

Reading: Second grade readers continue to grow like beanstalks! This week, we continued to focus on strategies for tackling hard words. Our core ideas this week were:
Readers look for word parts at the start, and end, of words to tackle tricky words.
Readers work extra hard to solve vowel teams, trying one sound then another to figure out the word.
As second grade readers, we know reading is thinking! As readers, we need to make sure we take our time to read each word accurately and that we understand what we are reading. One way we can help ourselves with comprehension is to stop, think, retell. Students have been practicing retelling using their fingers.

Theme/SEL: This week, our students focused on the concept of family. In partnerships and as a whole class we explored the following questions.
  • What is family?
  •  What makes some families different from others?
  • What would the world be like if all families were the same?
  • How does the fact that all of us come from different families make our class a more interesting place?
  • What is one thing that you feel makes your family special or different?

After this rich discussion students used construction paper, markers, crayons, and colored pencils to create family portraits!

This project, from Teaching Tolerance, is just another way for students to learn that, ‘We are all the same. We are all different. We are all unique.’

As always, we had a lot of fun together!

On Friday, we earned a Penny Celebration! We enjoyed watching Babe the Gallant Pig; especially because we had just finished the book during our lunch chapter book read alouds!

Reminders:

Second grade mathematicians began a new unit in math. This unit will focus heavily on place value concepts in 2 & 3 digit numbers, using place value to add and subtract, and using place value to compare numbers. Students began with the core ideas:

  • I can show how three digit numbers are composed, or made up, of hundreds, tens, and ones.

  • I can count and compare 3-digit numbers.

As part of our morning meeting, we include calendar work and routines that support important second grade mathematical concepts. This month, we are working with telling time using analog & digital clocks and calculating elapsed time. These are concepts that take a lot of practice!

In reader’s workshop, we began the second bend in our ‘Second Grade Reading Growth Spurts’ unit! The second bend focuses on working hard to solve tricky words. Early in the week, it was just so beautiful we read outside!

Writers were busy this week! We continued to learn craft moves from one of our favorite authors, Jane Yolen. We are working hard to try out some of Jane’s craft moves in our own small moment writing!

Second graders began a new unit in word study. This unit reviews the suffixes -s, -es, -ed & -ing. We will also introduce the concept of vowel vs. consonant suffixes and teach the new suffixes -er & -est. These new suffixes are used to compare things; -er compares two things while -est compares three. When we write words with suffixes, we take the suffix off, determine the base word, write the base word and only after we have the base word do we add the suffix. This week’s snap words include: animal, again, please.

We used our theme time this week to teach two more Second Steps lessons. We worked on focusing attention and following directions. We practiced focusing attention and blocking distractions by using our attento-scopes. To focus our attention, we use our eyes, ears, and brains. It is important to focus your attention and listen to all the directions to help you know what to do in class, and outside of school. One way to help remember directions is to quietly repeat them to ourselves. When we repeat directions, it really helps us learn and know what to do.

Second graders enjoyed the warm weather early in the work! We tried to savor the warmth and sunshine to its fullest!
