Word Study: Second graders are learning how to spell a new syllable type… the ‘d’ syllable! The ‘d’ syllable is often called the ‘double vowel’ syllable and encompasses vowel teams. As students move farther along their spelling journey, they will also learn that the ‘d’ syllable includes diphthongs such as ow and aw. These spelling patterns will be taught in the older grades. This week, our focus was spelling with ai and ay. Students learned that -ay usually comes at the end of a word. For ai, it is often in the middle. Students need to think if it is a-e or ai. Oftentimes they will decide by asking themselves, ‘What looks right?’
Writers’ Workshop: We have wrapped up our ‘How-To Guide to Nonfiction Writing’ unit! Students shared their writing by ‘gifting’ it to their chosen audience. We had fun acting as book fairies!
Readers’ Workshop: Second graders worked in goal oriented book clubs this week. Students self selected their goals based on the work of our ‘Bigger Books’ unit. They chose to work on reading with increased fluency, understanding literary language, or keeping track of longer books.
SEL/Theme - This week, our focus was on gratitude. Through one of our amazing community members, CCS received a large donation of school supplies from Staples. Second graders worked on ‘thank you’ notes to show their gratitude.
Math: This week, second grade mathematicians worked with measuring using centimeters. We started the week by learning about army ants to build our understanding of centimeters. We then created our very own army ant measuring strips to measure distances, lengths, and widths in and around our classroom. We had a lot of fun! Check out the video we watched as a class, it is silly and informative! Second grade mathematicians have learned that an army ant is one centimeter long. When army ants go on raids to find food, there are so many that the front of the swarm is 14 meters across! We found out that it takes ALL of second grade to measure the distance of4 meters!
