Math: Our mathematicians are having fun! Second graders have been working with the core idea: I can solve problems with pennies, nickels, dimes, quarters and dollars. We’ve been working to develop place value understanding within the context of money, skip counting forwards and backwards by 5s & 10s on & off the decade, and solving addition and subtraction story problems with money.
Reading: Second grade readers are working hard to apply what they have been learning all year! We have been reading multiple books on the same topic and then teaching our classmates about that topic. Next week, we’ll be starting a lot of work on nonfiction text features!
Word Study: We have begun to work on applying open syllables in our spelling. An open syllable as one vowel at the end of the syllable and the vowel sound is long (ex: be, baby). Y may be a vowel in an open syllable. If y is the vowel in a one open syllable word, it will make the long i sound (ex: cry), if it is the vowel in the second syllable of a two syllable word, it will make the long e sound (ex: baby).
Writing: Our nonfiction writers have been hard at work! Second graders have not only chosen topics, but are now choosing a particular audience for their writing. Teaching students to write for an audience allows them to be choosy with the information they put down on the page!
Science: We have begun our new science unit, ‘Pebbles, Sand, and Silt.’ During this unit, second grade scientists will be investigating the surface of the earth and how it has changed over time. This week, scientists explored the concepts of weathering and erosion by asking the question, ‘Why is there sand at the beach?’ We had fun recreating weathering and erosion as we created sediment and sand!
SEL/Theme: In our Second Step lesson this week, students learned strategies for handling making mistakes. We focused on the concepts:
Everyone makes mistakes, but if you’re feeling strong feelings, it’s important to calm down.
Making mistakes helps you learn, because mistakes show you what you need to practice more.
You can use belly breathing to calm down.
It’s important to calm down so you can think, learn, and ask for help when you need it.
Kindness Month - Our month-long focus on kindness has begun! Students have been having fun with ‘The Great Kindness Challenge.’ Throughout the week, we have explored kindness in many forms. We’ve had a great time spreading kindness across our community!
