Math: Second grade mathematicians are creating story problems! We are working to create problems using addition and subtraction with multi digit numbers and money. Some of us are even creating story problems using time!

Reading: We have begun the third bend in our ‘Bigger Books’ unit. In this bend, students are learning strategies to keep track of longer books. As our books get longer, we need to work extra hard to hold onto and interpret the information and story!

Word Study: On Friday of last week our second grade squad wrapped up unit 9 of FUNdations with an end of unit assessment. On Monday we began unit 10. Unit 10 will focus on a new type of syllable, the double vowel syllable. In the past our second graders have practiced reading these syllable types but now we will take a closer look and practice using these spelling patterns in our writing. So far we have reviewed and practiced the vowel teams ai & ay. We learned that ai is used when the long a sound is in the middle of a syllable. In addition, students practiced using their spelling procedure to determine whether the syllable is a v-e syllable type or a double vowel syllable type. Lastly, second graders learned that ay is used when a long a sound is heard at the end of a syllable. It was a busy week in word study!

Writing: Second grade writers completed their opinion letters and used checklists to polish and publish their work. We have also started bend three of our opinion writing unit, in which writers will be able to write award nominations for their favorite books!

Science: On Wednesday this week our geologists concluded the Pebbles, Sand, and Silt unit of study! Student’s reviewed their data and reflected on what they learned through our investigations. We explored many topics and made various discoveries about the earth's surface, weathering, erosion, and earth materials.

SEL/Theme: This week we launched the next unit in Second Step. This unit’s topic will focus on solving problems. On Tuesday our class practiced the first STEP in the process: Say the Problem (without assigning blame). This step helps students de-escalate conflict by considering the situation from another person’s perspective. By seeing the situation in a neutral light, students are able to move forward and will get to a solution much more effectively.

On Monday, second graders began eating lunch in the cafeteria! As a group, we went practice Monday morning before we got to enjoy lunch in the cafeteria. We even get to sit with students from the other second grades at our tables!

Second graders continue to love practicing mindfulness & yoga on Monday mornings.

It’s getting to be that time… impromptu extra recess! We had our first extra recess of the season this week!

Check out our #lotsofsocks! Thank you for helping us recognize and celebrate World Down Syndrome Day!
