  • In observance of Yom Kippur and Dashian, there will be no school Wednesday, October 5, 2022.

  • It was wonderful to meet so many of you on Thursday night!

  • Save the date! Tuesday, November 1 will be our first family chaperone opportunity… hiking up Pease Mountain! If you are interested in supporting this experience, please refer to the CCS Family/Student Handbook for the steps you will need to complete to become a chaperone/UNsupervised volunteer.

*We will have more family opportunities throughout the year! Not all of these will require family members to be chaperones, some will be for supervised volunteers.

Math: Second grade mathematicians are flexible thinkers! This week, we worked to reinforce numbers facts to 10 & 20 and worked with our math fingers & number racks. Students have also been focusing on our habits of interaction, including thinking before speaking (and giving others the time they need to think), explaining our thinking, listening to understand, and asking genuine questions.

Each morning, students have a morning meeting. As part of this experience, we talk about the date and reveal our new calendar icon. Students are finding so much math in our calendar experience that they wanted to challenge you! Tell your child what you notice…what patterns you see…what generalizations you might make… Have fun!

Word Study: Second graders continued their review and grew their first grade spelling patterns. This week focused on closed syllables, digraphs, blends, digraph blends, and spelling options for the /k/ sound. We practiced tapping the individual sounds in one syllable words, writing them down, and marking them up. Another focus was handwriting. Proper pencil grip and letter formation is a skill that requires practice and our second graders were up to the challenge as they worked.

Writing: Our small moment narratives are growing! This week, we studied how our mentor authors craft their endings and focused on our use of punctuation to support our readers. Second graders are learning a lot about crafting small moments!

Reading: Second grade readers are working hard on stamina, perseverance, and the concept that reading is thinking! Reading is thinking includes our ability to read words accurately on the page AND ensuring our own comprehension. This year, we will be using our hand as a graphic organizer to help support our ability to retell (and synthesize) our fiction books. We call this a Five Finger Retell.

Theme/Social Emotional Learning (SEL): This week, we wrapped up our mini unit devoted to mindfulness. The essential questions of the mini unit are: “What is mindfulness?” and “How does mindfulness help me?”. We learned that mindfulness is something that can help regulate our bodies and minds. We took the time to notice how each activity made our body and brain feel. We also talked about how these activities feel different to everyone, we are all unique and we are all working on noticing what is happening in our body to find out what works best to help us be in a space where we are ready to learn and grow!
