Reminders:
Please include Cindy LaWare (claware@cvsdvt.org) on any attendance & dismissal update emails.
The weather is changing! Please make sure your child has an extra set of weather appropriate clothing in their backpack at all times.
Please sign and return your child’s Pease Mountain permission slip. It was in their Home School Folder today. If you child was not in school today it will be sent home with them on their next school day.
Each week second graders head off on a different ‘Quiet Time Vacation’. We learn the location of a country, a bit about its flag and official language(s), and then enjoy scenery from that country. Ask your child where they went this week! Support them to tell you which continent, and country, they visited!
We would love to have soft tissue in our classrooms. If you would be willing and able to donate a box of soft tissues, we would greatly appreciate it!
With cold and flu season upon us, many children are getting tender/sore throats. Please make sure they pack their water every day. You are also welcome to send them in with cough drops!
Math: Our second grade mathematicians have been working hard! We have been focusing on building fluency of number facts to 20 and applying facts to 20 in story problem contexts. Students have also been working to understand how seven known addition strategies can be extended! For example, if you know your doubles facts (ex: 4+4 = 8) then you may use those doubles facts when thinking beyond ones. (ex: 40+40=80, 400+400 = 800). Check out the table below and ask your child to show you what each strategy means!
Writers’ Workshop: Students have been working in our last bend of our small moment narrative unit. In this bend there are two goals: first, students will work with increasing independence, transferring what they have learned as a group during this unit to work that is now largely self initiated, and second, children will devote careful attention to revision and editing, aiming to make their writing as clear and as powerful as it can be. Next week, you should find LOTS of writing from this unit in your child’s home school folder.
Word Study: This week in word study we completed Unit 2 and started Unit 3 of FUNdations. Unit 2 focused on reading, writing, and marking glued sounds and bonus letters. During unit 3 we will look closer at glued sounds and start our investigation of vowel teams.
Readers’ Workshop: Second grade readers have been working hard to tackle tricky words! Students are also working to read like writers. As they are reading, each time they have a reaction, students can ask themselves, ‘How did the author do that?” Students are thinking about what was powerful, why it was powerful, and how the author did it. In this way, students are learning craft moves from many different mentor authors.
Science: Second grade scientists are working to be curious about their world! We have begun the year asking, ‘How do scientists know so much?’ Together we explored this question and determined that scientists ask questions, make observations, record what they see and ask more questions. Questioning leads scientists to observe more, conduct investigations and experiments and record their findings. Scientists are curious! Our second graders are curious about why leaves change in the fall. We took our curiosity outside to observe leaves, record our observations and think about what we know. Next week, we will learn from experts more about why leaves change color in the fall!
SEL/Theme: Second graders celebrated Digital Citizenship Week (10/17 - 10/21)! Students participated in two activities to help them understand the importance of being safe, responsible, and respectful online. A big focus for our students was to decipher the difference between personal information and private information and how to minimize their digital footprint.
To learn more about “Digital Citizenship” check out this short video from Common Sense Media.
Special Event: On Wednesday, second graders participated in Fire Safety Day! We were thankful that Ms. Ginger of the Charlotte Volunteer Fire & Rescue team was able to spend time with our squad to review important routines and procedures that can keep everyone safe in the event of an emergency.
