 Reminders:

  • No school Friday, December 23, 2022 through Monday, January 2, 2023. We’ll be back at CCS on Tuesday, January 3, 2023!

Math: Second graders are working hard to apply their strategies, in particular the use of the open number line, to story problems. We worked hard to read the problem, write an equation that matched the problem, solve the problem & show our thinking, and answer the question.

Writer’s Workshop: We wrapped up our poetry unit! Please enjoy these videos from our celebration!

Word Study: This week we reviewed long vowel sounds created with a silent e, also known as vowel-consonant-e syllable type words. We started with closed syllable words such as hop and then compared them with v-e words such as hope. The e at the end makes the closest vowel a long vowel and becomes a silent letter that makes no sound. We also worked on adding consonant suffixes to v-e words such as -s (hopes)and -ful (hopeful). We do not add vowel suffixes to v-e words yet. Second graders learned to use a k for /k/ between two vowels and a procedure for figuring out which letter (z,s) makes the /z/ sound. It was a busy and productive week!

Reader’s Workshop: Second graders are word solvers! We wrapped up our ‘Power Up! Next Level Word Solving Skills’ unit and are ready to tackle long words! The following two pictures highlight the culminating work of each bend in this unit.

Theme/SEL: During our second step lesson students learned about compassion and its importance in peer relationships. During the lesson students practiced noticing and understanding what someone else was feeling. By noticing the physical, verbal, and situational clues students practiced determining what others were feeling. This allowed them to gain empathy for others. In second grade we know that when you have empathy for someone, you can show your care and concern by saying something kind or doing something to help. We learned this week that when you show care and concern it is called showing compassion.

Science:We did it! Second grade scientists have worked so hard to discover the mystery mixtures! Through close observation of our substances (salt, corn starch, sand, and baking soda) and carefully conducted investigations, we were able to identify which materials were used in each mystery mixture. The four tests we performed on our substances gave us much needed information about the properties of each material. This information allowed us to compare what we already knew about each substance with the materials that were in Mixture A and Mixture B. Be sure to check out our Science Journals which show the data for all of the experiments we investigated!

These last two weeks have held many wonderful moments and created fantastic second grade memories. Some highlights included playing in the snow, enjoying the 5-8 winter concert, playing Dreidel (thank you, Brie!), participating in Spirit Week, and working hard to complete our special Second Grade Recipe Book! We look forward to more adventures in 2023!
