2023-2024 - First Glance and Placement Process
In anticipation of our placement process, we wanted to let everyone know that the teams we are planning on for the 2023-2024 school year are in place. We ask that all families and caregivers with students in grades K-7th grade complete the following parent input form by April 17th.
Request for Help:
This year's second graders would like to learn 'hello' (or similar greeting) in as many languages as they can. Currently we are working on the 20 most widely spoken languages in the world (as of 2023).
The computer tutorials we have sound so robotic! We would LOVE to record actual people speaking the language as it truly sounds. If you, or someone you know, speaks another language fluently, and are willing to have us record your greeting/hello, we would love to include your voice in our project!
If you are able to help us, the recording will take approximately two minutes. We have directions for you to record yourself or, if you would prefer, you may come in and we can record you. If you can support this project, please send us an email with the language you could record. We will then email you directions on how to record or set up a time for you to be recorded by one of us.
Thanks so much for considering,
Shannon & Danielle
Math: Second grade mathematicians continued to focus on adding and subtracting within 1,000. Working with place value and flexible number sense are two major foci in second grade!
Writing: We are experts in so many areas! Students continue to work hard to write teaching books, focusing on their information, their writing craft, and editing!
Word Study: In word study this week second graders began reading multisyllabic words that contained the long a sound in one of the syllables. They then got to work using the spelling option procedure to decide what combination would create the long a in certain words. So far second graders know that open syllables, v-e syllables, and double vowel syllables can create the long a sound. We also learned about homophones. Words that sound the same but mean different things. Sometimes the words are even spelt differently such as main and mane. With this understanding we practiced finding words in our student dictionaries to make sure that we were using the correct spelling.
Reading: As we work with bigger books, we’ve learned that authors often use playful and inventive language. It is up to the reader to push themselves to make sure they understand what the language really means. We’ve had fun working with this special language! Our next group of lessons will be focused on maintaining comprehension as we read longer books.
Science: Second grade geologists have wrapped up their Pebbles, Sand, and Silt unit focused on earth materials. Our next unit will explore maple sugaring, past and present.
SEL/Theme: Second graders are continuing to learn how to solve problems using ‘S’ - say the problem without blame ‘T’ - think of solutions that are safe and respectful, ‘E’ - explore consequences, and ‘P’ - pick the best solution. Students will continue to practice their calm down strategies and problem solving strategies. This week, we worked to problem solve after we hurt someone’s feelings. Second graders worked to use the STEP method to take responsibility for their actions and make amends.
Second graders are busy and having lots of fun in school! Now that the weather is getting sunnier, we are trying to get out more. We are also honoring Women’s History Month through read alouds and art.
