Friday, March 29, 2024

 Reminders:

  • No school Monday, April 8, 2024 for the solar eclipse.

  • No school Wednesday, April 10, 2024 in observance of Eid Al Fitr.

  • April 16 is the last day to vote on the school budget. For more information about the proposed 2024-2025 budget you can check out this helpful link from CVSD & the school board.

  • We have a few spots left for adult volunteers to go up Pease Mountain! If you would like to join us, please use this sign up. (Remember, volunteers will need to complete the CVSD Procedure for Supervised Volunteers & Chaperones. This will include a background check and fingerprinting. Please refer to page 15 of the  CCS Family/Student Handbook 2023-2024 for more details on this procedure.)

Math: Over the last two weeks our second grade mathematician’s have continued to work with numbers through 1,000. Students have been:

  • Developing place value understanding within the context of money

  • Skip counting forwards and backwards by 5s and 10s off the decade

  • Solving addition and subtraction story problems with money

  • Skip count by 10s and 100s

  • Understanding that the digits in a 3 digit number represent 1s, 10s, and 100s

Word Study: In word study this week second graders began reading multisyllabic words that contained the long a sound in one of the syllables. They then got to work using the spelling option procedure to decide what combination would create the long a in certain words. So far second graders know that open syllables, v-e syllables, and double vowel syllables can create the long a sound. We also learned about homophones. Words that sound the same but mean different things. Sometimes the words are even spelt differently such as main and mane. With this understanding we practiced finding words in our student dictionaries to make sure that we were using the correct spelling.

Writer’s Workshop: Our writing community is working on nonfiction, or information, writing. Second graders began by reviewing the major work they did in first grade and then began thinking about what nonfiction writing looks like in second grade. Students learned that writers study other nonfiction authors, noticing the interesting and cool things those writers do to teach, and trying those moves on right away in their own writing. We have a lot of knowledge in our squad!

Reader’s Workshop: Second graders are continuing to focus on strategies to support the reading of longer, more complex text. Students began this unit by focusing on fluency. We then introduced strategies to understand literary language. As we continue to work to apply our new strategies, we are adding strategies that focus on keeping track of longer books. Our second grade readers are working hard to read to understand!

Science: Our second grade scientists are studying eclipses to get ready for the Solar Eclipse on April 8! Last week we learned about two types of eclipses, solar and lunar, and how they are different. Our class learned that a solar eclipse happens when the moon moves in between the sun and the earth. A  lunar eclipse happens when the earth moves in between the sun and the moon. We are going to be sharing this knowledge with the whole school next week during the Whole School Assembly! CVSD will also be proving Solar Eclipse viewing glasses to all students!

SEL/Theme: Second graders are continuing to learn how to solve problems using ‘S’ - say the problem without blame ‘T’ - think of solutions that are safe and respectful, ‘E’ - explore consequences, and ‘P’ - pick the best solution. Students will continue to practice their calm down strategies and problem solving strategies. This week, we worked to problem solve after we hurt someone’s feelings. Second graders worked to use the STEP method to take responsibility for their actions and make amends.

Check out some photos from our week together!

Friday, March 15, 2024

 Reminders:

  • No school, Friday March 22, 2024.

  • Second graders are going on a field trip on Monday, March 25, 2024.

  • Mud season is here! Please make sure your child has a pair of indoor shoes and outdoor shoes.

  • Now is a great time to check your child’s backpack for extra clothing. Please be sure they have an extra set of clothes (including socks) in their correct size. Thank you!

Math: Our second grade mathematicians have been working with place value and extending their knowledge to one thousand. During our first group of lessons, students:

  • Imagining, visualizing, and counting the number 1000

  • Building place value understanding up to 1000

  • Adding and subtracting by 10 within 200

This week we have begun thinking about place value with money. Students are:

  • Developing place value understanding within the context of money

  • Skip counting forwards and backwards by 5s and 10s off the decade

  • Solve addition and subtraction story problems with money

Word Study: This week we wrapped up unit 9 in our word study. This has been one of the trickiest units so far! However, our squad knows how to use the spelling options procedures to effectively write words with the /ǝr/ sound. Knowing when to use er, ir, and ur takes time, practice and repetition. As you read with your second grader before, try to notice when you come across one of these r-controlled vowels in a word. On Friday we launched unit 10 and began our exciting journey with vowel teams, also known as double vowel syllables! Specifically we learned what combinations can make the long a sound. We learned that ai and ay both say /ā/ like in the words bait and play. Second graders will also learn when to use this syllable type when hearing the long vowel sound in a word and when to use the other syllable types to make the long a sound (such as open syllables and v-e syllables).

Writer’s Workshop: We have begun our new writing unit…”How to Guide to Nonfiction Writing!’ We began by revisiting the work students did with nonfiction writing in first grade. We reviewed the anchor charts they made in first grade and began brainstorming topics they know a lot about. Students then began the new work of second grade nonfiction writing!

Reader’s Workshop: We are into our next reading unit, ‘Bigger Books Mean Amping Up Reading Power.’ This unit is broken into four bends, or groups of lessons. During our first bend, students worked to read with increased fluency. As we move into our second bend, our focus will be strategies for understanding literary language.

Science: Last week our second grade geologists wrapped up their Pebbles, Sand, and Silt unit focused on earth materials. In preparation for the solar eclipse happening on April 8th, our class began a mini unit on the solar eclipse. In our first lesson, we investigated the moon and its cycle. Second graders created a moon book which tracks the moon’s cycle every 3-4 days. We can’t wait to see what happens next!

SEL/Theme: March is women’s history month and our second grade artists are celebrating by learning about important women around the world! Last week’s lesson learned about Alma Thomas, an African American artist and teacher. Alma was inspired by nature and the world around her, especially all the colors of the world. Our class used pencil to create designs in the style of Alma Thomas.

Eloise came to visit us on Friday, March 15th!
Thanks to this second grade opinion writer, Eloise was able to make a special guest appearance!
