January 8, 2021

 Reminders:

  • No school Monday, January 18th in honor of Martin Luther King Jr. Day

  • Please remember to follow the expectations outlined by the VT DOH at all times. We want your children to be able to continue to be together, in person. This will take each and everyone of us to make this happen.

  • Please remember that we try to go outside everyday. Support your children to have weather appropriate clothing and footwear.

Math: This week ended our Jack and the Beanstalk unit in math! Students worked as a whole class and independently with open number lines to solve two digit addition. Using skips and jumps of tens and ones students used 3 different addition strategies to solve word problems and addition equations. They also had to solve problems calculating the total cost of a bean using cents per unit of measurement, in this case 1 penny per 1 unifix cube length.

Reader’s Workshop: Second graders continue to work hard during our unit ‘Power Up! Next Level Word Solving Skills.’ This week, students wrapped up the first bend by learning the sixth, and final, syllable type: consonant-le. We began the second bend of the unit which focuses on syllable division patterns. Second graders are learning a lot about the English Language!

Writer’s Workshop: Poetry continues to be in the air! Second graders are beginning to turn their attention to word choice. Second grade poets know that it’s important to search for the exact, honest word to match what they are trying to say. Poets also repeat words, lines, sounds, and images to give their poems rhythm, sound, and music to bring out the meaning.

Word Study: In word study second graders learned some new suffixes ( -ful, -less, -ment, -ness, -ish, -en, and -able) and reviewed the suffixes learned prior to break (-es, -ed, -ing, -er, -est). Using their whiteboards practiced writing and reading the base word first and then the whole word, thus understanding how the suffix brought new meaning to the words. They also were introduced to some prefixes, a part of words that are written before the base words (mis-, un-, non-, dis-, trans-). It was a very full and productive week!

SEL/Theme: This week we practiced reading and identifying the feelings of others. Using clues such as a person’s eyes, brow, mouth, and body language, the children picked up clues and made educated predictions about how a person might be feeling. We also discussed how in one situation two people may have different feelings, and that is okay!

Students looked at the photo above and used their observation skills to identify how Julian was feeling while waiting for his turn to look in the mystery bag. They shared their ideas with the class as well as their reasoning.
Next, students watched a short video about the first day of school! Afterwards we looked at this photo of two children from the video, Sally and Louisha, . We discussed what was the same and what was different about the girls experiences as well as their emotions/feelings. In the end students realized that it is okay for people to have different feelings about the same situation.

Check out some more photos from our week together!

Whoops! We forgot to deposit our pennies after our celebration! No worries, we just took a quick trip to the main lobby on Monday. Time to fill that jar again by taking care of ourselves, others, and this place!

Wow! Readers did a great job finding syllable types and division patterns in their books!

Everyone worked hard and had fun during Work Board this week!

Brrrr! Cold weather + cozy kids = fun times!
