Reminders:
No school tomorrow, Friday, March 19th.
Please remember to follow the expectations outlined by the VT DOH at all times. We want your children to be able to continue to be together, in person. This will take each and everyone of us to make this happen.
Please be aware that the state updates this website daily, guidance can change and it is important that we are all on the same page.
Supply request: Do you and your family love to eat Talenti frozen treats? If so, we would love the container! If you have a dishwasher cleaned Talenti container (or two), with the top screwed on, that you are willing to donate for our storage needs, we would greatly appreciate it!
Math: We are continuing to focus on place value with the addition of thinking about place value and money. Students are working to:
Develop place value understanding within the context of money
Skip counting forwards and backwards by 5s and 10s off the decade (ex: 3 ,8, 13, 18, 23, 28…)
Solve addition and subtraction story problems with money
Now is a wonderful time to help your child by having them count coins & money! Each student has a new set of game cards for ‘Close to 25¢.’ This is a wonderful game to play with your child at home! You’ll find the directions on your child’s remote schedule.
Word Study: Wow… our second graders are working hard to understand and apply spelling patterns! We wrapped up our seventh word study unit and have begun our eighth. Here are the core ideas we are focusing on:
Unit 7
I can identify y as a vowel or consonant.
I can identify open syllables as:
One vowel which is the last letter of the syllable
Vowel sound is long
Able to be combined with other syllable types
I can write two syllable words with closed, VCe, & open syllables with and without learned suffix patterns.
Unit 8
I can identify r-controlled syllables as:
A single vowel followed by r (ar, er, ir, or, ur)
Vowel is neither long nor short; it is controlled by the r
Able to be combined with other syllable types
I can write two syllable words with closed, VCe, open, and r-controlled (ar & or only) syllables with and without learned suffixes.
Writers’ Workshop: Second grade nonfiction writers have moved from writing all they know about a nonfiction topic to beginning to think about the audience. Choosing an audience provides writers with a purpose and helps them angle their writing toward a person or persons who will ultimately read their book. Thinking about an audience allows students to be choosy with the information they put down on the page.
Readers’ Workshop: In the second bend of our ‘Bigger Books’ unit, second graders have begun to explore literary language. When students understand the literary language in their texts, their comprehension deepens because they can begin to think about nuance, tone, mood, and about how something is done. When authors write with especially playful language, they’re hoping the reader will notice what they’ve done and pay special attention to the language and the meaning. Our second graders are always on the lookout for this playful language!
Theme/SEL: We have begun our fourth, and final, Second Step unit. In this unit, students will learn a process for solving problems with others in a positive way. This week’s lessons focused on the first step of this process.
