Math: This week, second grade mathematicians wrapped up one unit of study and began our new unit! Each unit builds upon the knowledge of the previous unit as we grow our math minds and skills across the year. Our new unit is called, ‘Measurement, Fractions, and Multi-Digit Computations with Hungry Ants.’ This week, students learned a new game focusing on Race to the Cookie Jar. This game focuses on multi-digit addition and subtraction. We had a lot of fun trying to get our ants to the cookie jar faster than our partners!

Word Study: Second graders continue to focus on the r-controlled vowels. We are focusing on two syllable words with closed, V-e, open and r-controlled syllables with and without suffixes. Please continue to support your child to write with correct capitalization, punctuation, legible handwriting, and accurate spelling of taught spelling patterns and snap words.

Writers’ Workshop: This week, second graders wrapped up the second bend in our ‘How-To Guide to Nonfiction Writing’ unit. Students have been working hard to teach others about their topics. They continue to focus on writing for their audience. We have been working on using our Information Writing Checklist and Language Conventions Checklist to grow as writers. Second graders have also been enjoying ‘Fancying Up’ their writing as they prepare to share their writing with others!

Readers’ Workshop: We have paused our ‘Bigger Books’ unit until we came back from April Break. We needed to do this as we are working in partnerships reading longer books which we were unable to do over the last two weeks. Second graders have focused on revisiting some of our previous learning. We have revisited literary language, retelling, and ‘Growing Our Word Solving Muscles.’

SEL/Theme: During our theme time this week, second graders practiced applying the Problem-Solving Steps. Students worked together to create rules for a new game. We had A LOT of fun!!

Expressive Arts -  We had fun playing xylophones in music!

Our second grade community loves to be together!
