Reminders: Please make sure your child has an extra set of weather appropriate clothing in their backpack daily.

Math: One of the mathematical 'High Leverage Concepts' second graders focus on is using place value understanding to add and subtract numbers accurately, flexibly, efficiently, and strategically within 1,000 (in context and in equations). For the past two weeks, much of our work has been using hands-on activities, games, and lessons to compose (build) numbers using their place value components. (Example: 35 as 3 groups of 10 and 5 ones).

Reading: Second graders have begun a new unit in reading…. Power Up! Next Level Word Solving Skills. This unit takes a deep dive into teaching syllables and syllable division patterns. The first bend introduces students to the six syllable types. So far, we have learned the first four syllable types: closed, vowel-consonant-e, r-controlled and open. We are working hard to use our word study skills to decode longer words!

Word Study: These past two weeks in word study we have focused on glued sounds and bonus letters. Students used their sound boards to build one syllable words that contained the glued sounds -all, -am, -an, -ang, -ing, -ong, -ung, -ank, -ink, -onk, and -unk. They also practiced writing words with these sounds on their whiteboards and in their FUNdations notebooks. Lastly, students firmed up their bonus letter skills. We have some wonderful word detectives in second grade!

Writing:Second grade authors had a fabulous celebration of writing by publishing and reading their

completed stories. The whole second grade squad shared their reading in small groups with one another and their teachers, plus Mrs. Sumner, Mrs. Bouteiller, Mrs. Boffa, and Ms. Cook! Each author used such powerful craft moves and brought their stories to life! Second graders shared how they pulled readers into their story and audience members shared the powerful moments they heard in each story. Now, second grade writers are ready and excited to start our next unit on poetry!

Science: Wow! Our scientists have really been honing their skills of observation, questioning, and data collection these past few weeks! We have begun our unit investigating the Properties of Matter. Matter’s most commonly found as a solid, liquid, or gas, and takes up space. During our first investigation our young scientists worked together to describe the properties of the matter around them, such as a rock which could be hard, heavy, smooth or rough. We also learned that matter can be made of many different materials and each material can have similar or different properties. In our second investigation, scientists began observations of household substances in order to help their teacher solve the mystery of mistakenly unlabeled Mixture A and Mixture B!

SEL/Theme: This week second graders continued their journey with our Second Step program. This week’s objectives were to practice being assertive to help us effectively communicate our needs with others. Being assertive means asking for what you want or need in a calm and firm voice. Being assertive is a respectful way to get what you want or need. Knowing how to ask for help is an important skill for learning. The ability to communicate assertively not only contributes to academic success, it is also important for solving problems and standing up for oneself or others.

Technology: Last week was Digital Citizenship Week in our district. Our Digital Learning Leaders decided to focus on Internet Privacy and Security and chose some lessons for us to do together. Common Sense has a great website full of resources for families, and the Digital Learning Leaders encourage you to create an account and do some activities at home with your student. In second grade, our Digital Citizenship Week focused on learning to pause and think while online.

 Our Learning Objectives:

  • Understand the importance of being safe, responsible, and respectful online.

  • Learn the "Pause & Think Online" song to remember basic digital citizenship concepts.

Here are some at home resources which you could look over with your student:
