Math: This week, second grade mathematicians wrapped up our second unit in math. In the last module of the unit, students focused on ‘thinking in twos’ as a way to explore multiplicative thinking and number patterns. Students worked with arrays (objects arranged in rows and columns) to extend counting by 2s. In this way, repeated addition of the same addend (number added to another number) and its connection to multiplication was explored. This foundation work will be built upon next year and beyond.
During morning meeting calendar work, second grade mathematicians have begun to focus on two-dimensional shapes with an emphasis on quadrilaterals and lines of symmetry.
Reading: Our second graders are readers who can decode long words by breaking the words into syllables! This week, we learned the last syllable division pattern in our unit. Students have worked to break long words into syllables, identify syllable types, and decode long words. Second grade readers have been practicing their new skills in groups and together, we’ve been reading Mercy Watson Goes For A Ride by Kate DiCamillo.
Word Study: This week our second grade squad wrapped up the fourth unit in word study. During this unit students reviewed and practiced using suffixes. Students did activities that reinforce the concepts behind suffixes. Now we know that -s and -es are added to a baseword to make it plural. -er and -est are used to compare (and -er can be used to describe a person that does or provides an action, for example teacher). -ed is used to show something has already happened and -ing is used to show that something is happening right now. It was a busy week!
Writing: This week in writing students have been using sound words, or onomatopoeias, to help the reader hear what is happening in their poems. Using words like the “tick, tock of a clock” bring music to their work. Our poets have also added comparisons to their work in order to present the mood of the poem, it could be “as joyful as kittens playing with a ball of string”, or “gloomy like a rainy day”. Now our poets can transform ordinary language into comparative language!
Science: During science this week we followed up on identifying items that are classified as solids, liquids and gases. We also matched our science terms with their definitions. Be on the lookout for our Properties of Matter Science Journals coming home this week! Next, we will focus on the Phases of matter and how solids and liquids change.
SEL/Theme: This week’s lesson in Second Step focused on “feeling confident”. Students practiced identifying physical and situational clues that indicate the feeling of confidence. They also practiced noticing and detecting when their own or others’ feelings changed. Our class learned that practicing helps build confidence and feeling confident helps you do your best and makes you proud.
