Math: Second graders are creative mathematicians! This week, students worked with three digit numbers. We are learning to identify and understand numbers by recording them in their expanded form. For example, the expanded form for 753 is 700 + 50 +3. This helps us understand place value! We have also been working hard to create our own story problems. To solve a story problem, we make sure we have an equation that matches the story, show our thinking, answer the question in a complete sentence and double check out work.
Reading: This week, we began the second bend in our ‘Becoming Experts’ reading unit. This bend focuses on tackling both the tricky word work and vocabulary development we need to navigate nonfiction reading.
Word Study: This week we reviewed long vowel sounds created with a silent e, also known as vowel-consonant-e syllable type words. We started with closed syllable words such as hop and then compared them with v-e words such as hope. The e at the end makes the closest vowel a long vowel and becomes a silent letter that makes no sound. We also worked on adding suffixes to v-e words such as -s (hopes), -ed (hoped), and -ful (hopeful).
Writing: Second graders have started the process of writing nonfiction “Teaching Books”. To get started we discussed what we already knew about making a teaching book and reviewed the important things to remember when writing to teach information to readers. Three steps second grader writers used go as follows; Step one was choosing a topic they knew everything about, step two was making a plan and creating a table of contents to organize ideas across the pages, step three was writing facts and using different text features to engage the reader.
SEL/Theme: During our Second Step lesson this week students focused on predicting others’ feelings through role play. Second graders practiced understanding other children’s perspectives and explored possible reasons for others’ actions and feelings in response to different scenarios. We ended the lesson understanding that accidents can happen, it is important to consider other people's feelings and not assume intentions, and to offer help and ask clarifying questions when necessary.
We had so much fun this week that Ms. Hall-Potvin forgot to take pictures!
