Math: Our second grade mathematicians have continued to explore numbers through 1,000. We have focused on using our knowledge of place value to explore the question, ‘How far?’ As we have explored distance, we have worked on the concepts of:

  • Skip counting by 10s and 100s

  • Understanding that the digits in a 3 digit number represent 1s, 10s, and 100s

  • Adding and subtracting 10 and 100 off the decade

Reading: Second graders have been learning about the different text features of nonfiction books. It’s been fun reading and exploring all the ways nonfiction authors help their readers learn!

Word Study: Second graders began a new unit of word study this week. After closing out our last unit on open syllable and syllable combinations our class is now focusing on r-controlled syllable types. R-controlled syllables are syllables that contain an r-controlled vowel. Students learned how to identify, mark-up, and write these syllable types with a specific focus on -ar and -or. Lastly, students learned that when they hear “or” in the beginning or middle of a word that they will use -or. But if they hear “or” at the end of a word they should use -ore. For example: original, born, and more. After vacation we will explore more r-controlled combinations.

Writing: We are published nonfiction authors! Second graders enjoyed reading each other's work as we celebrated the end of our nonfiction writing unit. Our learning targets for this unit  were:

Learning Targets

  • I can write an information piece that teaches readers about a topic, includes a beginning that names the topic and interests the reader, different parts that teach about the topic, language to show my expertise, and an ending section that provides my reader with a sense of closure.

  • I can use a checklist to determine my writing goals.

Science: In science we have been exploring the concept of weathering. Weathering is a process that wears down rocks and/or breaks them down into smaller pieces. Weathering can occur in the presence of water, ice, heating and cooling, wind, and plants! We also identified the types of rocks used in our experiment and described the properties of each rock. Tuff is a light color rock, mixed with ashes from a volcano, and can break apart when rubbed against another rock. Scoria is a reddish color rock that is rough and bubbly, and was formed from the top layer of lava. Scoria crumbles very easily to make sand and dust. Basalt is a dark gray rock formed from hot lava and it is smooth and very hard. Second graders had fun as geologists!

SEL/Theme: This week we celebrated kindness month with a class-wide kindness card exchange! Second graders worked hard to create a card for each member of their classroom community. Then on Monday and Tuesday of this week students decorated their own bag and on Tuesday afternoon they collected cards from their classmates in their bags. It was wonderful seeing all the smiles on their faces as they read the special messages.
