CCS students have access to EBooks & Audiobooks through our library! Check out our library’s ‘how to’ section for more information.
Math: Second graders have just begun a new geometry unit focused on exploring shapes. In our first module students have been comparing shapes and identifying their specific attributes such as points, sides (edges), corners (vertex) lines of symmetry and congruent sides.
Reading: In reader’s workshop we concluded our Series Book Clubs unit! We had a celebration of learning by having a debate around the characters in our series. Students were able to debate by taking a position and providing supporting reasons with examples, collecting evidence from the text, and working together to make arguments stronger, in order to prove their stance. Our next unit will include a review of topics including word solving skills, syllable division and meaning.
Word Study: During word study students focused on the long o sound. Using our listening skills we determined where we heard the long sound in a word. When we knew if the sound was in the beginning, middle, or at the end of a word we then looked at what could make that sound. Using our spelling options strategies we were able to figure out the correct spelling.
Writing: This week in writer’s workshop second graders have been expanding their persuasive writing to identify and advocate for solving problems in the world. Students have used all the knowledge about a topic and have been sure to include important information about the issues in order to make their writing really convincing.
Science: Second grade scientists have been exploring the question, “What do plants need to survive?” We have planted seeds and have been observing how they’ve been growing as well comparing different types of plants to one another.
Social & Emotional Learning (SEL): Throughout second grade, we have been supporting and growing Executive Functioning Skills. What are Executive Functioning Skills you may ask. According to the Center on the Developing Child at Harvard University, “Executive function and self-regulation skills are the mental processes that enable us to plan, focus attention, remember instructions, and juggle multiple tasks successfully. Just as an air traffic control system at a busy airport safely manages the arrivals and departures of many aircraft on multiple runways, the brain needs this skill set to filter distractions, prioritize tasks, set and achieve goals, and control impulses.”

This week, we worked on acclimating to tasks & environments by teaching students how to ‘S.T.O.P.’!
