Friday, May 13, 2022

Reminders:

  • No school, Monday, May 30 in observance of Memorial Day.

  • The last day of school is a half day on Friday, June 10th.

  • Please continue to:

If your child is at home and you would like for them to engage in learning, please go to CCS At Home Learning Opportunities.

Math:
We wrapped up our measurement unit this week! Students focused on:
  • Ratios/proportional reasoning exposure

  • Solving one and two-step addition and subtraction story problems

  • Adding three two-digit numbers

  • Estimating length in inches, feet, and yards

Reading:
Second graders are using their opinion writing skills in reading! This week, readers began working on sharing their opinions about books with others. In reading, our focus has been on determining importance, supporting reasons with examples, collecting evidence from the text, and working together to make arguments stronger.

Word Study: This week in word study our second graders began investigating the oy and oi as our latest addition to our “d” syllables. To practice recognizing second grade spelling patterns we got into groups and played Word Study “Go Fish”.

Writing: Second grade writers have launched their final writing unit of the school year…Using Words to Make a Change (Persuasive Writing of All Kinds). The first bend of this unit focuses on using our writing to notice and solve problems we see in our school and at home. Writers are working to use all of their writing skills to persuade others that the problem they see needs to be solved. Writers are helping others by sharing their solutions with a broader audience!

SEL: Negotiating and deciding on rules for playground play can cause conflicts among students. In this week’s lesson, students applied the Problem-Solving Steps to negotiating game rules. This gave students a constructive process to work out differences and state problems without blame.

Special Event:  On Tuesday our second graders were able to participate in an International Flipgrid presentation featuring Mo Willems & Jarret and Jerome Pumphrey! During the live session the co-creators of the book It’s a Sign answered questions posed by students around the world. Afterwards Mo led us in a guided drawing of his character, Piggy. It was such a wonderful opportunity to engage with authors and illustrators.

After an unexpected fire alarm this Friday, our class got to enjoy some sunshine!

Check out these mathematicians learning how to play a new game!

These wordsmiths work on recognizing various syllable types with a game of "Go Fish".

Sunny days call for snack outside!

What Mo Willems' character is your favorite?

One of our favorite games to play, Down by the Banks!

Students practice writing their snap words on each other's backs. Such silly fun!
