.
Math: Second graders are mathematicians! Our first two weeks of math are spent working on our Growth Mindset. We work to learn about our brains and begin to see how our brains are muscles that they can grow and change. This week, students focused on the big ideas:
Everyone can reach the highest levels of math they want to with hard work and perseverance.
Mistakes are valuable and grow your brain!
Questions are really important. Always ask questions, always answer questions. Ask yourself: Why does that make sense?
Want to learn more about the growth mindset in mathematics? Jo Boaler’s, a researcher out of Stanford University, youcubed resource is incredible!
Writing: Second grade writers are sharing stories about their lives! This week, we worked to build our writing community by sharing stories from our lives. We start by telling stories. In this way, all students are successful from the start! Students learn and grow from each other and stories bring us all together. As a group, we thought about what brought our stories to life and who we organized them as we spoke. We worked to think about tools to help our story telling and discovered we need writing folders to keep our work, and tools, in a safe place. We’ll use our story ideas as we transition from oral storytelling to small moment narrative writing next week.
Word Study: During the first few weeks of school, our second graders review many of the skills they learned in kindergarten and first grade. We reviewed snap words as well as handwriting pathways. Our class also practiced using tools in the classroom to help check our spelling. Take a look at some of the snap words we practiced!
Reading: It’s been wonderful to jump back into Readers’ Workshop! This week we began our first reading unit of second grade… Reading Growth spurts. During the first bend, or section, of this unit, second grade readers will focus on taking charge of their reading growth by not only choosing what they can read but also how to read. We’ll work to highlight the importance of goals and that magical combination of fluency and comprehension.
SEL/Theme: Our second grade squad explored many important routines and ideas during our first two weeks. We learned about our school wide expectations, our classroom mantra, and the importance of having a growth mindset. Through games, crafts, and our very first whole-school assembly, we came to understand that at CCS we take care of ourselves, others, and this place. In our classroom we know that we are all the same, we are all different, and we are all unique. Building community is one of the most important things we will do this school year. We will help each other grow and learn. We also know that we have the power of yet! There will be many things that we learn this year, as readers, writers, mathematicians, and as members of a community. We are so excited and grateful to go on this journey together!
