Math: Students have been working on developing fluency with number facts to 20, subtraction as a process of finding the difference between two quantities and understanding & using these strategies: Doubles and Halves, Doubles Plus or Minus One, even and odd numbers. We’ve had fun pushing our thinking to ask, ‘Is the sum of all double facts an even number? Why? Why not?’
Word Study: During word study this week students learned the new snap words “shall”, “pull”, and “full”. These snap words are words that they should be able to recognize, read, and spell in a “snap”. For spelling patterns second graders learned about the glued sound -all like in the word ball. Our squad was also introduced to r-controlled vowels. When a vowel is immediately followed by the letter r the sound of the vowel is changed so it is neither long nor short, it is controlled by the r. At this point in the year, students are working on recognizing r-controlled vowels as they read. In addition to r-controlled vowels students also learned about bonus letters. The bonus letter only gets added if the f, l, s comes immediately after the vowel. It was a busy week in word study!
Writing: In our small moment writing unit, we are working to revise with intention. Students have been working to think about what effect they are trying to create on the reader and using craft moves in ways that make sense. Second graders also investigate Jane Yolen’s Owl Moon for craft moves that they could try in their own writing.
Reading: Second grade readers are rolling up their sleeves to work hard! We are working on reminding our second grade readers that if they want to read well, they’ll need to be able to figure out even the hardest words on their own. In this unit we review many of the word solving skills from first grade. We will grow our word solving skills by adding many more strategies and decoding patterns throughout the year.
SEL/Theme: This week we want to highlight another way second graders work with our mantra, “We are all the same. We are all different. We are all unique.” As second graders transition from recess back into our classroom, we have fifteen minutes of Quiet Time. During Quiet TIme, second graders go ‘on vacation’!’ This vacation looks like enjoying the scenery of a country as we listen to relaxing music. Each week we highlight a different country; talking about its capital, language(s), continent, and where it is in relation to us. If we have a few minutes, we also try to learn a bit about that country using a great resource called Culturegrams. If your child is interested in learning more about any country, check out Culturegrams to learn more!
This week’s country was New Zealand!
