Math: These past two weeks in math have been an exploration of adding together two digit numbers. This year, second graders will explore many strategies and pathways to effectively and efficiently add together larger numbers. This week and last, our class practiced using open number lines to flexibly think about and add numbers. Students would start
In addition to the number line, students explored multiplicative reasoning. Our second grade squad learned about addends (the number that gets added to another number). Then they practiced adding equal addends. Specifically, 2s. To do this, we explored the concept of pairs. We listed all the things that we could think of that came in pairs. Then we calculated the total number of objects based on how many pairs were present. For example, if we had 1 pair of mittens, we would have 2 mittens altogether. If we had 2 pairs of mittens, then we would have 4 mittens (2+2=4). And if we had 3 pairs of mittens, then we would have 6 mittens altogether (2+2+2=6). Lastly we explored multiplication math sentences. We used the language “groups of” to explain this thinking. For example 3 groups of 2 would be expressed as 2x3=6.
Reading: After returning from the Thanksgiving break our second graders began a new bend in our Power Up unit. Now that we understand the different syllable types, we are practicing dividing longer words into syllables. Students identify the vowels within the words, count the consonants in between, and then determine where to split the word into syllables. So far second grade has learned about VCCV, VCV, and VCCCV patterns. Check out the corresponding rules below!
Writing: Second graders have been practicing bringing out the meaning of their poems by using different structures. By reading other poet’s pieces they were able to explore mask poems, poems of address, as well as riddle poems. It was a fun challenge to push ourselves to write from different perspectives!
Word Study: This week in word study our squad focused on vowel suffixes and consonant suffixes. We reviewed the suffixes we already knew and introduced 7 new ones! We were detectives as we determined the meaning of these new suffixes( -ful, -less, -ment, -ness, -ish, -en, and -able) in the context of their use in a whole word. For example, the word thankful has the baseword thank and the suffix -ful and it means to be full or to be conscious of thanks.
Later on in the week we learned about prefixes, or adding a part ot the beginning of a baseword in order to change the meaning of the whole word. Check out the chart below to read the prefixes and their definitions. See if you and your second grader can brainstorm some words that contain these prefixes.
SEL/Theme: This week’s lesson in Second Step focused on “feeling confident”. Students practiced identifying physical and situational clues that indicate the feeling of confidence. They also practiced noticing and detecting when their own or others’ feelings changed. Our class learned that practicing helps build confidence and feeling confident helps you do your best and makes you proud.
Science: During science this week second grade scientists were able to complete their observations of the household substances that their teacher used to make the mystery mixtures. Students used data collection sheets to record their observations and describe the properties of each substance. Our young scientists even began using what they discovered to make predictions about what could have been used to make “Mixture A” and “Mixture B”. Stay tuned for what we will discover about the mystery mixtures next week!
