 Reminders:

  • The last day of school is a half day on Friday, June 16, 2023.

  • Please make sure your child has a water bottle daily. If your child does not have a water bottle, please let us know and we will provide them with one.

Math: We learned a fun new math game called ‘Target Seven Hundred.’ This game focuses on place value, comparing three digit numbers, and finding the difference between three digit numbers. Students had fun thinking flexibly about numbers!

Writer’s Workshop: We celebrated our information writing with the entire second grade squad! Students shared their books and enjoyed reading and learning about their classmates’ topics.

Word Study: We began our twelfth word study unit this week. In this unit, students are working to spell words with the /oy/ sound using oi and oy. Students learned when to use either of these vowel teams within a syllable or in a multiple syllable word. We also learned and practiced reading and writing snap words, noticing what spelling patterns they did and did not follow.

Reader’s Workshop: Second grade readers are continuing to learn how to become experts on characters in series books. They’ve been thinking about characters, character relationships, and even trying to predict how characters will react to problems they encounter in text!

SEL/Theme: Did you know that May is Asian American Pacific Islander Month? This week, students learned about artist Pacita Abad who was born in the Philippines. Students were inspired by Pacita Abad’s ‘Painted Bridge’ and created a mural to celebrate Pacita Abad’s belief that art is for everyone.

“Pacita Abad's painting is characterized by color, constant change and experimentation from the 1970s right up to her passing in 2004. Pacita's most extensive body of work is her vibrantly, colorful, trapunto paintings, mixed media painted textile collages and abstract assemblages. Many are very large canvases incorporating hand-stitched textiles, ribbons, sequins, beads, buttons, tin, mirrors and many other found objects the artist collected during her travels throughout Africa, Middle East, Asia and Latin America. During her 32-year career Pacita also created works on a complete range of other materials including paper, prints, bark cloth, metal, ceramics and glass. Just a few months before she passed away, Pacita painted a 55-meter long bridge in Singapore and covered it with 2,350 multicolored circles.”
