Friday, February 23, 2024

 Reminders:

  • No school Monday, February 26-Friday, March 1, 2024.

  • Here is the Pease Mountain Volunteer Sign Up. Please join us if you are able to! (Remember, volunteers will need to complete the CVSD Procedure for Supervised Volunteers & Chaperones. This will include a background check and fingerprinting. Please refer to the CCS Family/Student Handbook 2023-2024 for more details on this procedure.)

Math: We’ve been busy! Second grade mathematicians wrapped up their measurement unit which focused on measuring with inches, feet, and yards. Students jumped right into their fifth unit, ‘Place Value to 1,000.’ During the first group of lessons, students will focus on:

  • Imagining, visualizing, and counting the number 1000

  • Building place value understanding up to 1000

  • Adding and subtracting by 10 within 200

As we engage in this work, students will be using place value language such as: ones, tens, hundreds, digit, more than, less than, greater than, fewer than, and equal to.

Word Study: We completed unit 8 and began unit 9. In this new unit second graders will learn about the next group of r-controlled vowels, er, ir, and ur. This week we learned the keywords that match these vowels; er-her-/ər/, ir-bird-/ər/, and ur-burn-/ər/. We used a familiar strategy to help us know which r-controlled vowel to use when spelling words with the /ər/ sound. The spelling options procedure that we used for /s/ and /z/ came in handy this week. This spelling pattern is trickier but we feel confident using our tools and strategies to help us figure it out!

Writers’ Workshop: What  wonderful celebration! Thank you so much for making our Opinion Writing Open House such a joyful experience for our students. We are so grateful for this community.

Readers’ Workshop: We wrapped up our nonfiction reading unit! It’s been a lot of fun learning about different topics. As a squad we focused on reading and learning about Tigers. Ask your child what they learned from Laura Marsh’s Tigers and Valerie Bodden’s Amazing Animals: Tigers.

SEL/Theme: February is Kindness Month in second grade. Each week we focus on a different aspect of kindness and connect it to our CCS expectations of taking care of ourselves, others, and this place as well as our second grade mantra: We are all the same. We are all different. We are all unique. Last week’s lesson focused on sharing kindness with others. Second graders looked at powerful quotes that demonstrated kindness towards others. Our second grade squad was inspired by the following quote from Maya Angelou, “Try to be a rainbow in someone else’s cloud”. We then created rainbows by using recycled construction paper, watercolor paint and cotton balls. Take a look below to see their amazing creations!

This week’s lesson focused on taking care of this place! Our squad read The Color Of Us by Karen Katz. The Color Of Us inspired our second graders to celebrate the world’s uniqueness by creating a globe with recycled construction paper and paint.

Science: Last week our geologists continued their exploration of Pebbles, Sand and Silt. Students worked with the question: How can rocks be separated by size? They used a new tool, the screen, to work with their group to separate gravel, pebbles, and sand.

Check out these photos from our week together!
