  • Second Grade End of Year Party - Tuesday, June 11, 2024 8:15 - 9:15 AM

***If you would like to sit during this event, please bring your own lawn chairs.

*** If it rains, we will host an indoor party in our classrooms.

  • Would you be able to bring a lawn game and/or a breakfast treat to share? If so, please use this sign up to let us know! We are in need of more lawn game options. (ex: Frisbee, ladder ball toss, etc.)

Math: Second graders are exploring geometry! We’re having a blast! During the first group of lessons we worked with attributes of 2-dimensional shapes and introduced the vocabulary Geometry: a branch of mathematics that deals with points, lines, angles, surfaces, and solids

Fraction: A number used to describe the parts of a whole that has been partitioned into equal parts. During our second group of lessons students are working with the Core Idea: I can find the area of a shape; using the definition: Area - a measure of the space on a shape. Students are working with the vocabulary: area, half/double/halves, equal, equation. We are having a lot of fun!

Word Study: This week our second graders began unit 14 of word study. In the last unit we looked at the vowel teams that make the long o sound including oa, oe, and ow. This week we learned the second sound that ow can make, which is /ou/, as in the words owl and plow. Another vowel team that can make the /ou/ sound is ou, as in the word trout

Writer’s Workshop: Our words are making change! Second grade writers continue to use their writing to help solve problems. We’ve shared our problems and solutions with many amongst the CCS community and have already begun to notice action! One solution that has been noticed is that there is now a trash can outside to help with daily litter! Thank you to all who have helped!

Reader’s Workshop: In Reader’s Workshop we started our final reading unit “Putting It All Together”. In this unit we will review our word solving skills, focusing primarily on syllable division and meaning. Using the mentor text, Diary of a Spider by Doreen Cronin, students will work together to use their decoding skills. There will also be an emphasis on strengthening their fluency by improving their prosody (the rate, cadence, and expression with which they read).

Science: Thank you, Mr. Flint! Our second graders had such a wonderful experience building with Rigamajigs!

End of Year Cheer: In our last few weeks together our second graders have been busy with our continued learning, having fun, and making memories together. Some highlights of were: Sweet Memories End of Year Craft, Dear Edwina, Summer Bucketlist & T-Shirt Printing, Whole School Assembly.
