Purple Home-School Folders: Please make sure you check your child’s folder at the end of the week and return it to their backpacks for the next school day.
Math: Mathematicians wrapped up their first unit focused on developing solid understanding of addition and subtraction to 20 and some of the ways in which these two operations complement each other. We have begun our second unit called ‘Place Value & Measurement with Jack’s Beanstalks.’ The goals of this unit are to:
Explore base ten concepts and models within 1,000
Review the first three place value units: ones, tens, hundreds
Develop strategies for counting, measurement and double-digit computation
Decomposition - the ability to break numbers into their component parts
Develop early understanding of the open number line and base ten area pieces
Word Study: Last week in word study we wrapped up Unit 2. This unit had focused on closed syllables and glued sounds. This week we completed Unit 3, a shorter unit which will teach second graders how to read, write, and mark-up closed syllable exceptions. Closed syllable exceptions look like a closed syllable (one vowel, closed in by at least one consonant) but they do not sound like closed syllables. Instead of a short vowel sound, they have a long vowel sound. There are 5 closed syllable exceptions and we learned them as glued sounds. Check them out below!
We also began Unit 4 of word study this week. This unit focuses on suffixes. Suffixes are added to base words and can change the meaning of the word. The suffixes we reviewed this week are used to make words plural, they were -s and -es.
Writers’ Workshop: What a celebration! Second grade authors came together as a whole squad to celebrate the culmination of our narrative writing unit. There were many special CCS adults on hand to lead small groups as students shared their writing with one another.
We have begun our poetry writing unit! In the first bend, or group of lessons, we introduced students to the sounds and feelings of poetry. Poetry is so much more than writing words on a page. It is a deepening of observation and thought as we look at, and interact with, the world around us.
Readers’ Workshop: We have begun our ‘Power Up! Next Level Word Solving Skills’ unit. In the first group of lessons, students will be introduced to the six syllable types in the English language. Students will also be learning to identify common prefixes & suffixes in order to determine the base word. When decoding, syllable types & syllable division patterns are used with base words. So far, students have learned about three syllable types & their exceptions: closed, r-controlled, and v-e.
SEL/Theme: We wrapped up our first unit in Second Step… Skills for Learning. Throughout this unit, students learn to listen, focus attention, use self talk, and be assertive. Second graders began our second unit, which focuses on empathy, this week by working to name feelings, decide whether those feelings are comfortable or uncomfortable, and to think about how faces, bodies, and situations give us clues about feelings.
Science: Last week our second grade scientists began a new unit of study. In this unit they will learn about matter and the stages of matter. Through videos, questioning, and exploration students were able to define important terms such as materials, properties, as well as how to classify objects based on their properties. We are all looking forward to learning more about the properties of matter in the coming weeks.
Quiet Time: Our students have ‘traveled’ far these past two weeks!
Fire Safety: On Monday morning, our second-grade class welcomed members of Charlotte Fire & Rescue for a Fire Safety Month presentation. Among our visitors were firefighters, paramedics, and other essential helpers in our community. We were excited to see two familiar faces, Mr. Caldwell and Mrs. Blanshine, who serve both at the firehouse and here at CCS!
The presentation left our students with three key takeaways:
Know who to call in an emergency: 911.
Have a family meeting spot: In case of an evacuation, it’s important to have a designated location.
Recognize a fully-geared firefighter: Now, our students know exactly who to look for in an emergency.
Our second graders are now better prepared and know who to trust if they ever find themselves in need of help.
