 Reminders:

  • No school Monday, May 25, 2026 in observance of Memorial Day.

  • Please support your child to have a water bottle at school daily. If they do not own a water bottle, we can help get one.

  • If you would like to volunteer for the last spot to lead a Pease Mountain hike this school year, please check out the Pease Mountain sign up. We truly appreciate your time and support!

Math: Did you know an army ant is about one centimeter long? Your second grader is learning about army ants as a platform to work with centimeters and meters. Earlier this year we learned about customary units (inches, feet, and yards) and now we are exploring metric units (centimeters and meters).

Word Study: This week students continued their investigation of double vowel (d) syllables. We have moved to the second row of our vowel teams anchor chart. This row includes the vowel combinations that make the long e sound. Our class learned when to use these combinations and practiced reading and writing words that had mixed syllable types. Check out the vowel team anchor chart below!

Writers’ Workshop: Our nonfiction writers have been busy! Students continue to teach their audience about a wide variety of topics. We are expanding our nonfiction writing skills to include different types of informational writing.

Readers’ Workshop: Second graders have begun our next reading unit focused on series books! During our first bend, our focus was on becoming experts on characters. In our second bend, we are focusing on the author's craft. As a class, we are focusing on the Frog and Toad series by Arnold Lobel as we explore strategies for reading series books like experts.

Second Step: We have officially wrapped up our Second Step lessons for the school year!

Project:  Did you know that May is Asian American Pacific Islander Month? This week, students learned about artist Pacita Abad who was born in the Philippines. Students were inspired by Pacita Abad’s ‘Painted Bridge’ and created a mural to celebrate Pacita Abad’s belief that art is for everyone.

“Pacita Abad's painting is characterized by color, constant change and experimentation from the 1970s right up to her passing in 2004. Pacita's most extensive body of work is her vibrantly, colorful, trapunto paintings, mixed media painted textile collages and abstract assemblages. Many are very large canvases incorporating hand-stitched textiles, ribbons, sequins, beads, buttons, tin, mirrors and many other found objects the artist collected during her travels throughout Africa, Middle East, Asia and Latin America. During her 32-year career Pacita also created works on a complete range of other materials including paper, prints, bark cloth, metal, ceramics and glass. Just a few months before she passed away, Pacita painted a 55-meter long bridge in Singapore and covered it with 2,350 multicolored circles.”

Science: This week, graders participated in Green Up Day activities by helping to clean up our campus!

Quiet Time: Our students have ‘traveled’ far these past two weeks!

Mrs. Spellman’s class taught Ms. Hall-Potvin their math magic trick! Ask your child to show you their ‘magic’!

Check out these photos from our time together these past two weeks!
