It was such a gift to meet with so many of you this week during family conferences. We truly value our partnership and collaboration. Thank you for all your insight and support!

Our second grade community is genuinely coming together. We are living our mantra of ‘We are all the same. We are all different. We are all unique.’ We are also taking care of ourselves, others, and this place! Our community is having a lot of fun together!

Writers were hard at work this week! We began meeting with our writing partners and learned that writers plan and let their stories grow by trying things out and thinking as they write. Oral rehearsal is an important part of second grade writing. Talking about our ideas and telling our story before we put pencil to paper allows us to think deeply about what to include. We are also more apt to add details and to revise along the way.

In reader’s workshop, we are continuing our work on characters. This week, we learned that readers reread to see new things about the story and to learn more about the characters. One book that we reread was Blackout by John Rocco. When we first heard this story, we thought it was about a power outage. We then reread the book to learn even more. We paid closer attention and realized that it was also about a family remembering to make time to spend together.

Get ready to have some fun with your mathematician this week! In school, we learned how to play “Make the Sum.” This is a great game to help practice addition facts through fifteen. We learned how to play games with a partner while also practicing physical distancing to keep ourselves and others safe. We hope you have fun playing this at home!

In word study, we focused on reviewing closed syllables and began working with the glued sound -all and the bonus letter pattern. A closed syllable has one vowel that is closed in by a consonant and makes the short sound. The bonus letter pattern is  when s, l, f and sometimes z are at the end of a word, following a short vowel, we need to double the letter. Examples include miss, grill, and fluff.

The leaves were beautiful this week. Ms. B took us outside and showed us how to do leaf rubbings and paintings. Our work is just as amazing as nature!

Check out some photos from this week!

Such a fun week!
