 Reminders:

  • Please remember to follow the expectations outlined by the VT DOH at all times. We want your children to be able to continue to be together, in person. This will take each and everyone of us to make this happen.

  • Please remember that we try to go outside everyday. Support your children to have weather appropriate clothing and footwear.

  • Please check your child’s extra clothing supplies.

  • Please sign & return your child’s semester one report card envelope.

Kindness Month: It’s almost February! In second grade, we will not be celebrating Valentine’s Day and instead will be celebrating kindness throughout the entire month of February! As a grade, we will be talking about, reading about, writing about, thinking about, and spreading kindness.

Math: Adding two (and later three) digit numbers consistently and accurately is a major focus of second grade mathematics. Second graders have been working hard to learn how to solve two digit addition and subtraction problems using place value. One tool that we are using is the open number line. Students have also been learning about time and money. Time and money are concepts that need consistent practice to master. One way you can help your child at home is to support them to tell time on an analog clock. Another strategy is to have them help you count change!

Word Study: Our class has been hard at work learning the following concepts. Students learned to identify the syllable type vowel-consonant-e (v-e)They also learned that the letter e has a very important job to do. It helps the first vowel say its name (making a long vowel sound) while staying silent itself. We also learned that u can be a tricky vowel because it has 2 long-vowel sounds. For example mule and rule. When working with v-e syllables students learned that s can say /s/ or /z/ between two vowels. For example chase and wise. There is no rule to tell us which one to use z or s when they hear the /z/ sound. So they have to try each way to see which one looks right. Students learned that many times, they will recognize which spelling is correct because they have seen the word in books. Lastly, we worked learned about the v-e exception -ive like in the word positive or active. Did you know that -ive can be a glued sound in a baseword OR it can be a suffix? Whew! We learned a lot this week!

Reading: We have begun our new unit, ‘Becoming Experts.’ Second graders are working in the first bend of this unit, which focuses students’ attention on growing knowledge as they pay attention to details, put parts of text together, and question texts. Students are learning how to notice details and then put those details together to form larger understandings. Second graders are working hard to learn more and more!

Writing: Our second grade poets have been working on different structures of poetry. They have learned that poets choose specific structures to support the meaning of their poem. Some of the structures we have been exploring are list poems, conversation poems, and story poems. Students have also been working with point of view. It’s been a lot of fun!

Theme: Your child is learning how to show care and concern for another person by listening, saying kind words, and helping that person. This is called showing compassion, and it makes people feel better. Being able to show compassion helps children get along with others.
