Our second grade team would like to thank you all for your generosity and care during Teacher Appreciation Week. Every day brought new surprises, big smiles, and full hearts. You and your children are the best gift. We are so grateful for the sweet memories we get to make together as we watch your children blossom and grow. The gifts, cards, and love you and your children gave us were overwhelming and so greatly appreciated, thank you
We had a very busy week in second grade! The months of May and June tend to be a whirlwind. Between end of year assessments, end of year activities, wrapping up curriculum, and packing in as much fun as possible we try to pause to appreciate and savor our last weeks together. We create a balanced schedule of “have-tos” and play to make sure we are meeting the kiddos social emotional needs.
Here is what our week looked like!
Math: Math this week was filled with great thinking and problem solving. Students worked on dividing numbers into equal parts. They also learned a new math game called The Gardener's Friend. Lastly, they practiced solving story problems that involved money! It was such a busy and productive week!
Word Study: This week we continued our work with reading and writing longer words by combining syllable types. Students also practiced using their spelling option procedure when hearing the long a sound in the middle of a one syllable word. These second graders have done a fabulous job exploring homophones and using all they know, including searching the dictionary, to find the spelling that matches the meaning.
Writers’ Workshop: We did a lot of work in Writers’ Workshop this week! We closed our ‘How-To Guide to Nonfiction Writing’ unit by showing off everything we knew in our post-assessment writing prompt. We also kicked off our new unit on Opinion writing. These second graders are definitely excited to express themselves in this next unit!
Readers’ Workshop: We wrapped up our ‘Bigger Books’ unit this week and started our new unit of study! We have joined our Series Book Clubs! In this first bend of the new unit, our clubs will split into pairs. Each pair will read and share one book from a series while the other pair reads a different book from the same series. This will allow them to come together to do some critical thinking and processing about their books, the series, as well as the author! As we move through this bend we will learn and practice paying close attention to our books to learn all we can as we read. We will not just study the characters but also the plot!
Other: Our second graders showered their teachers with beautiful dandelion creations! The second grade squad is amazing! Our team was excited to participate in the planting of the Arbor Day tree next to our playground!
