  • The last day of school, Tuesday, June 15th, will be a half day.

  • Please send in all library books!

Math: Second grade mathematicians started the final module in math this week. They practiced adding and subtracting three digit numbers by playing some new math games. The first game, Target Seven Hundred, had students practice using a  variety of subtraction methods.

The next game students learned, Sum It Up, allowed our second graders to practice adding three digit numbers as well as comparing 3-digit and 4-digit numbers.

Lastly, students practiced solving story problems in pairs this week. After reading the problem as a class, students restated the problem in their own words, stated what they needed to figure out, and identified the important information from the problem that would help them create a solution. Then, in pairs, students went off to create an equation that matched the problem and used a variety of strategies to show their thinking. It was a very successful week in math!

Word Study: This week students wrapped up Unit 11 by playing several word storting and syllable identification games. Our class has a strong grip on the many syllable types we have learned this year, including closed, open, vowel-consonant-e, r-controlled, and double vowel syllables. On Friday our second graders showed us what they know by taking the Unit 11 assessment.

Writing: Second grade opinion writers have been hard at work! We are working to share our opinions with others by writing to persuade others that our favorite books are worthy of awards. We are working on supporting our opinions with strong evidence so that others will agree with our opinions.

Reading: We are deep into our series books! Second graders are working with the idea that part of the joy of reading is sharing books and opinions about books. It’s been fun talking and sharing our reading!

SEL/Theme: Last week we had a blast screen printing T-shirts with Ms. B. Next week, we will be tie-dying our T-shirts!
