Classroom Reminders:
There will be no school on Monday, May 31st in observance of Memorial Day.
We try to go outside daily. Please send your child ready for the outside and inside.
Please make sure your child packs their water bottle every day.
The last day of school, Tuesday, June 15th, will be a half day.
Our students did an amazing job doing their library scavenger hunt this year… please help them be just as diligent as they try to find all of their library materials!
Important District Reminders:
As the end of the school year approaches, we want to alert families that ALL K-8 school-provided devices - Chromebooks or iPads and their respective charging cords - need to be returned to school by June 10th. Most of these devices, which pre-COVID were always in the buildings, have been going back and forth between school and home, and in some cases, remaining at home, for more than a year. Our industrious IT staff needs to access each and every device to check on the status and condition and provide any needed repairs. Please return all devices, along with the charging cord, to your child’s classroom teacher(s) by June 10th.
If your child will be participating in a summer school-based program that requires a Chromebook, one will be provided to them at that time. Other possible device needs for the summer will be determined soon and a check-out system will be in place. Watch for future communications!
Math: Have you ever thought about how many story problems can be created using just one background? Second graders have! We created a setting and then wrote a story that posed a problem. We enjoyed sharing our work with others and watching them try to solve our problems!
Were you able to make a prediction about what Joey the Kangaroo is chasing? Here is an updated version of our picture… What is your updated prediction?
Word Study: We began our eleventh unit in word study. This unit continues to focus on the D-Syllable with an emphasis on using the vowel teams: ee, ea, and ey. At this point, second graders know many ways to spell the long e sound! How many spelling patterns can you think of that capture the long e sound? See if you know as many as your second grader!
Writing: Second graders began the second bend in our opinion writing unit. This bend focuses on raising the level of their letter writing and working to incorporate conventions into their writing. We introduced the second grade opinion writing checklist as a way to reflect on our writing.
Reading: Reading clubs are fun! Most partnerships are on to their second or third book together. As groups, it’s been fun to meet and talk about characters and series together. We have begun our second bend in this unit. The second bend will focus on becoming experts on discovering the craft techniques an author uses. This helps us to look at the text more closely and consider what an author is trying to show.
