Thank you all so much for helping to keep school open and safe for all! Below are two resources. If you have further questions, please contact Nurse Lauren.
Workboard: Four times a week, students will have a ‘Work Board’ time. This is a time for students to apply and practice the skills they have learned during whole class-instruction.
WorkBoard is an important time for independent practice using materials and routines that support this. As teachers, we pull small groups of students during this time.
We introduced two online programs this week: Lexia and Dreambox. Both of these programs are computer adaptive. This means that as children work through the program, the program can provide corrective feedback and will adjust itself to appropriately match the needs of the child. If a child is working through a concept with ease, as evidenced by correct responses, the program will add concepts and challenge. If a child’s responses are incorrect, it will allow a few opportunities and then alter the activities to reteach and reinforce the concept. For this reason, we ask families to support their children by having them work independently.
Math: This week, students began to work with the core idea: I can count objects quickly by seeing numbers flexibly. We are working with multiple ways to represent numbers 0-10 and to make use of structure (such as groups of 2, 5, or 10) to add and subtract within 20. To support this work, we introduced two fun games: Shut the Box and Trash. Having FUN while working with mathematical concepts is key! These two games are super fun to play at home and may be played with 1-4 people.
Here are videos to learn how to play!
Reading: Second grade readers are working hard! This week, we began the second bend in our Reading Growth Spurts unit. This bend focuses on rolling up your sleeves and working hard to solve trick words! At home, please help your child to decode words by asking them to try one strategy, then try it another way, then give them the word and have them reread the sentence and keep going!
Writing: Our second grade authors have been sculpting their writing this week through the powers of re-reading and revision. Students were able to re-read their work and think, does this sound right and does this make sense? After reading and listening to their own words, writers were able to make impactful revisions to their small moment stories. We also began looking at tools, such as editing checklists, that writers use to help organize their process for revision.
