UPDATE: Students will start bringing home their home-school folders daily. On your child’s folder you will find their login information for all of the online platforms we use in second grade. If your child would like to access these at home they are more than welcome to do so! All programs are intended to be used independently by your child.
Math: This week, second grade mathematicians worked with the core ideas: I can investigate part-part whole relationships and combinations of 10 & I can solve problems using addition and subtraction. We learned a fun WorkPlace game called ‘Count & Compare by Fives.’ This game supports our work with seeing numbers flexibly, counting by fives & ones, and comparing numbers. Please support your child to use the language of less than, equal to, and greater than at home.
Writing: Second grade writers were introduced to a new tool this week… narrative writing checklists!
Word Study: This week in word study second graders explored digraphs and blends. We practiced tapping out 1 syllable words that had just digraphs, just blends, digraphs AND blends, as well as words with digraph-blends! Our second graders practiced writing and marking these words as well and building them on their own letter boards. Check out the pictures below to see examples of digraphs, blends, and digraph blends.
“ship” has a digraph-two letters, working together, to make one sound
Some other examples of digraphs are /wh/, /ch/, /th/, /sh/ & /ck/
“slip” has a blend- 2 or more consonants connected together, but you can hear each sound. Some other examples of blends are /fl/, /bl/ & /scr/.
The word “slush” has a blend in the beginning and a digraph at the end.
The word “lunch” has a digraph blend at the end of the word. The consonant “n” and the digraph “ch” blend together.
Reading: Our second grade readers are working hard to tackle challenging words! This week, we continued to focus on being flexible word solvers by using multiple strategies to decode a word. We continue to practice rereading for fluency once we have decoded a word by rereading the sentence, smoothly reading the decoded word.
Theme/SEL: Wednesday the 22nd brought us the first day of Autumn! To celebrate our class read the book “Little Tree” by Loren Long and used paint and q-tips/fingertips to make our very own autumn trees. Autumn in Vermont is a special and magical time of year. We will continue to enjoy the outdoors together as a group, please support your child in packing extra layers as the weather continues to cool. If you would like to listen to the story at home, check out the video below!
