Math: We have learned a new game: Make the Sum! This is a fun game that can also be played at home. The directions are below. This week, second grade mathematicians worked on developing fluency with number facts to 20 and subtraction as a process of finding the difference between two quantities.
Writing: Second grade writers have begun the second bend in our Narrative Writing unit; Lessons from the Masters. In this bend, students will focus on writing with intentions and learning craft moves from mentor authors. As writers, we engaged in a guided inquiry using Jane Yolen’s Owl Moon.
Word Study: Second grade spellers are working hard! This week, we worked with spelling the /k/ sound at the end of a word. We reviewed the pattern of using ck at the end of one syllable word after a short vowel. (Examples: pack, sock, Rick, luck) We will continue to work with the spelling of the /k/ sound next week. Students continued to focus on the sounds of a word by playing a fun game called ‘Pop Up.’ Ask your child what they did!
Reading: This week our readers worked on making sense of “tricky” words. Our readers practiced looking not only at how to read tricky words, but also thinking about the meaning behind words that authors use in their stories. We reminded students that as readers we do not have to wait for someone to correct our mix-ups and that we can check ourselves when we are reading. We learned that when we are reading and a word doesn’t sound right we can stop and think, “Does it make sense?”, and then use strategies to fix it up.
Science / Theme / SEL: This week we began our Introduction to Science Investigation around the question “How do scientists know so much?”. Through this investigation we were able to discover that scientists use observation, questioning, and recording information to learn new things. We practiced some skills that scientists use such as close observation and recording information in a science journal. After recording our observations, we used our findings to ask deeper questions and learn something new about the world around us.
