Math: This week, we revisited three digit computation with a focus on place value. Students continued to add and subtract using multiple pathways and strategies and apply their knowledge to solving word problems.

Reading: We wrapped up the fourth and final bend in our ‘Bigger Books’ unit! Students reflected on their work in the unit and self-selected a reading goal: fluency, literary language, or keeping track of longer books. Once students selected their goal, they worked in reading clubs to create a plan to coach and support one another in reaching their goal. It was wonderful to hear students giving feedback to one another!

Word Study:  In word study we wrapped up Unit 10 and started Unit 11. Much like Unit 10 students focused on double vowel teams and syllables. The three vowel teams we practiced using all make the long e sound. They  are ee, ea, and ey. Students practiced reading, marking up,and writing words that followed these patterns. They also practiced recognizing and defining homophone pairs in this week’s lessons.

Writing:  Our second grade writers have been busy crafting nominations for books or characters they believe should win an award. This week we shared our written nominations and designed the awards to celebrate our opinion writing unit!

Science:  For science this week we learned about acids and bases! Second grade scientists explored and observed what happens when acids and bases are mixed together. During our observations and demonstration we learned that vinegar is an acid and baking soda is a base. When you mix them together there is a chemical reaction that results in bubbles (carbon dioxide) which cause the mixture to overflow. Then we went outside and mixed another base (Mentos) with another acid (diet cola). In this demonstration when the acid and base were combined-POP.. there was a large eruption!

SEL/Theme: Second graders continued to exercise their understanding of the Problem-Solving Steps by using them to come up with positive solutions to interpersonal problems. As a class we set positive expectations for how students should handle situations where they have hurt someone else’s feelings or upset someone else. In particular, students worked on coming up with ways to make amends, so if a problem arises it can be solved rather than escalated.

We have been enjoying the sunshine when we can! Our squad was excited to head outdoors for extra recess this week. In addition we spent our final PE class with Mrs. C outside! In preparation for this farewell all 3 classes made cards to express their appreciation.
