Math: This week, second grade mathematicians continued working with inches, feet, and yards. We are working hard to attend to precision, estimate, and use appropriate tools for the job.
Reading: We have begun the second bend in our Series Book unit. We have been discovering the craft techniques an author uses. This work helps readers read the text more closely and help them consider what an author is trying to show, the tone a scene evokes, and so forth.
Word Study: This week in word study students continued to identify, read, write, and mark up double vowel syllable types. This week explored how double vowel syllables can be combined with other syllable types to make longer words. Students also practiced identifying the long e sound within a word and determining if it was ee, ea, ey, e-e, y, or making the sound. At the end of the week second graders had fun applying all the syllable rules we’ve learned so far to mark up and read nonsense words.
Writing: During writing this week we wrapped up our mini unit on Friendly Letter Writing. In this unit second graders focused on the process & structure of writing a letter and on the specific conventions of writing a letter. Second graders ended this unit by writing letters to the third grade team. Check out the structure below to see what second graders know how to do!
Second Step: This week’s lesson focused on helping students navigate playground exclusion. This lesson worked to raise awareness and increase empathy for students who might be left out. Students learned positive norms for how to treat peers and increase their skills in using the Problem-Solving Steps by applying them to the problem of someone being left out. They also thought through ways to solve the problem by helping others join in games and group play.
Craft: Although this week brought colder temperatures than we would have liked, second graders decided to put out some good spring energy with a special craft. Check out the beautiful creations they made below!
