Reminders:
No school Monday, February 27 - Friday, March 3, 2023. We’ll be back together on Monday, March 6, 2023.
Spring conferences are around the corner! We like to give plenty of lead time as we know how challenging schedules can be. Here are the spring conference sign ups for second grade. Please let us know if you have any questions.
Math: Our mathematicians have been busy! Students have continued to work with the core idea: I can estimate and measure using inches, feet, and yards. Students are thinking about measuring and which tool to use for the job. (example: Should we measure a bus in feet or inches?) We have also focused on adding three two-digit numbers and solving one, and two, step story problems.
Writers’ Workshop: We are continuing to focus on opinion writing. Students are working to:
I can write about a topic showing my opinion using: a topic sentence, linking words, 2 supporting details with multiple sentences explaining them, and a conclusion sentence or section.
I can listen to others’ ideas to help add details to my writing.
I can use writing conventions such as legible handwriting, capital letters, punctuation, and grade-appropriate spelling.
Readers’ Workshop: In readers’ workshop this week our second graders continued their deep dive into nonfiction texts. We practiced gaining knowledge on a topic by reading multiple books on the same subject. Readers noticed similarities and additions to information shared across books. Ask your second grader what topic they explored this week!
Word Study: In word study this week our squad finished unit 7 and started unit 8. Unit 8 is all about r-controlled syllables. Earlier this year we learned about r-controlled vowels and how to address them when we come across them while reading. Now we are practicing recognizing and writing these sounds. This week we focused on -ar and -or/ore. We practiced reading and writing many words with these syllable types as well as the rules for marking them up. Next week we will look at -ir, -er, and -ur.
Science: Scientists are continuing their work exploring Pebbles, Sand & Silt. Last week, scientists explored the question, ‘Why is there sand at the beach?’ We learned about weathering, sediment, and erosion. Students had a blast turning paper boulders into sand! We are expanding our work with these concepts as we explore the question, ‘What happens to rocks when they rub together?’
SEL/Theme/Kindness Month: February is Kindness Month in second grade. Each week we focus on a different aspect of kindness and connect it to our CCS expectations of taking care of ourselves, others, and this place as well as our second grade mantra: We are all the same. We are all different. We are all unique. Our first lesson introduced the comparison of kindness to light. We reflected on the words of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and then created a lightbulb art activity to spread our light into the world. Our second activity focused on how we take care of our own light; the idea of kindness to yourself as a precursor to being kind to others. We reflected on quotes by Amanda Gorman, Oprah Winfrey, and Sogyal Rinpoche and then brainstormed what it looks like, sounds like, and feels like when we are kind to ourselves. We then grew our self kindness by creating sunflowers focused on self kindness.
World Read Aloud Day: Thank you to Mrs. Huestis for hosting a virtual authors visit from Kate Messner and Grace Lin to celebrate World Read Aloud day! Keep your eyes out for
