Reminders:
No school Monday, February 27th - Friday, March 3. We look forward to seeing our second graders at CCS on Monday, March 6, 2023!
Math: Second grade mathematicians worked hard with inches, feet, and yards and are now moving into our new math unit: Place Value to One Thousand.
Our Learning Targets for this unit are:
I can use measurement and conversion of measurements to solve problems.
I can tell and write the amount of money when given coins and dollar bills.
I can use place value understanding to compare and compose numbers.
I can show how three-digit numbers are composed of hundreds, tens and ones, and use this to compare numbers less than 1000 using symbols.
Our first group of lessons will create opportunities to count to one thousand and focus on:
Imagining, visualizing, and counting the number 1000
Building place value understanding up to 1000
Adding and subtracting by 10 within 200
Writing: During writers’ workshop last week students celebrated the end of our opinion writing unit. Our two second grade classes gathered together as a whole squad and partnered up with someone from the opposite class to share their final opinion pieces. After students listened to their partner’s opinion and their reasoning they shared whether they agreed or disagreed with their opinion.
This week in writers’ workshop second graders worked extra hard on their punctuation powers! After reviewing the purpose of ending punctuation (including periods, question marks, and exclamation marks) they got to practice using these marks properly in sentences. Then our crew learned about an important tool, the comma! Lastly, they learned all about contractions. Check out what they learned below!
Readers: In readers’ workshop this week we wrapped up the third and final bend of our nonfiction, “Becoming Experts” unit. Bend I focused students’ attention on growing knowledge as they paid attention to details, put parts of text together, and questioned their texts. Bend II worked to tackle both the tricky word work and vocabulary development students need to navigate nonfiction reading. Bend III set readers up to grow knowledge across texts as they read topic sets of texts, comparing, contrasting, and connecting information across texts and text sets and doing the vocabulary work that accompanies nonfiction reading. Our second graders celebrated the end of this unit by acting as “tour guides” for their chosen nonfiction topic.
Word Study: In word study our squad continued its investigation into “r-controlled” syllables. Students shifted their focus to the three combinations that say /ǝr/: -er, -ir-, and -ur. They practiced tapping, reading, and writing this new pattern in both single syllable and multisyllabic words. The most important tool they practiced using was their spelling procedure for figuring out when to use -er, -ir, or -ur when the /ǝr/ sound appeared in a word. Finding and using the correct r-controlled combination will become easier as they practice and come across the words with this syllable type in their own world and reading.
Science: In our Earth Science unit we set off to expand our understanding of geology. In this week’s investigation students observed and sorted rocks based on observable properties. Students were divided into groups and given a collection of dust covered rocks. They were then given five minutes to sort their collection based on one observable property. They then recorded their sort into their science journal. Afterwards, using water, they cleaned off their collections and took time to observe the rocks. Then as teams they created a new way to sort their river rocks based on a single property. Students also learned that there are three types of rock: igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic. It was an engaging activity!
SEL/Theme:
In Second Step this week we learned that everyone gets angry sometimes. Feeling angry is natural, just like all feelings are natural. You can use the Ways to Calm Down to help you manage your anger so you don’t do something hurtful. After you stop and name your feelings, try one or more of the following Ways to Calm Down poster. Some choices include belly breathing, using positive self-talk, and counting
Pre-Vacation Fun: Our second graders finished reading the wonderful Dick King-Smith classic, “Babe”. We laughed, we worried, we cried, we cheered! To celebrate its conclusion, we gathered as a squad to watch the 1995 film rendition of the literary classic. Such a wonderful time
!
Check out all the fun we've had!
