 Reminders:

  • Colder weather and snow flurries means it is time to bring snow gear! Please make sure you send your child to school with the following items. If you need any of the items, please reach out and we will find you what you need!

    • Outdoor Gear: Boots, jacket, snow pants, hat, gloves/mittens, extra socks.

      • Snow pants can stay in your child’s classroom all week. On Fridays we will send them home. Please go over your snow gear plan with your child.

      • IMPORTANT: LABEL ALL SNOW GEAR! Many items in second grade are identical to one another, labeling your child’s gear takes the guesswork out of what belongs to who.

    • Indoor shoes: Consider having your child leave a pair of “indoor shoes” in the classroom. That way they can wear their boots to and from school and have a comfortable pair of shoes to wear in the classroom.

  • Here is the Pease Mountain Volunteer Sign Up. Please join us if you are able to! (Remember, volunteers will need to complete the CVSD Procedure for Supervised Volunteers & Chaperones. This will include a background check and fingerprinting. Please refer to the CCS Family/Student Handbook 2023-2024 for more details on this procedure.)

  • No school Monday, November  20 - Friday, November 24.

Math:  In math our second graders continue to work on the concepts of place value and measurement. Early in the week we learned a new game called “Last One Standing”. The game starts with one person picking a number between 1 and 9. Then going around the circle, one at a time, students count up by 10s. Whoever is the first person to go over 100 has to sit down. The game is repeated until one person remains. We also learned a new board game called, “Steps and Leaps” where players roll 2 dice numbered 1-6, find the sum, move their marker and label where they land. Then the player spins to find out if they take 1, 2, or 3 jumps of ten (labeling each jump of ten as they go). Whoever gets to 100 (or beyond) first wins! It was a competitive and exciting week of new math learning!

Writer’s Workshop: We’ve begun to explore different poem structures. We’ve enjoyed reading poems with a poet’s eye and discovering ways we can be inspired by other poets.

Word Study: It has been so exciting to see and experience the connection between readers’ workshop and word study this week! This week we have been practicing finding, reading, building, writing, and marking-up words. A specific and special focus has been placed on base words and affixes. Affixes are additions to a base word that can clarify or change the meaning of the base word. In word study we have been focusing on suffixes and their meanings. Our squad has looked at -s, -es, -ed, -er, -est, and -ing.

Readers’ Workshop: Our readers are ready to tackle long words! We explored the six syllable types in our first bend and this week we began our second bend. During this bend, we will focus on the Core Idea: Readers decode long words by breaking the word into its syllables. As we entered this work, we worked with big ideas/reminders about decoding and then learned our first syllable division pattern: VC/CV.

Science: This week, second graders wrapped up their investigation on the properties of household substances. Students worked with the vocabulary: matter, liquid, solid, gas, and dissolve

SEL/Theme: This week’s lesson in Second Step focused on feeling confident. Students practiced identifying physical and situational clues that indicate the feeling of confidence. They also practiced noticing and detecting when their own or others’ feelings changed. Our class learned that practicing helps build confidence and feeling confident helps you do your best and makes you proud.

Check out some photos from our week together!
