Reminders:

  • Encourage your child to pack their water bottle each day. Hydration is important for overall health and wellbeing, especially during flu and cold season.

  • Here is the Pease Mountain Volunteer Sign Up. Please join us if you are able to! (Remember, volunteers will need to complete the CVSD Procedure for Supervised Volunteers & Chaperones. This will include a background check and fingerprinting. Please refer to the CCS Family/Student Handbook 2023-2024 for more details on this procedure.)

  • No school Monday, December 25, 2023 - Monday, January 1, 2024. Students will return to CCS on Tuesday, January 2, 2024.

Math: Math these past two weeks has been dedicated to the open number line. This math tool is a tool that is used by mathematicians to add and subtract larger numbers. Students have learned how to properly navigate the number line by taking large leaps of ten and smaller jumps of one.  There has been a large emphasis placed on recording each step so that students practice not only adding and subtracting with accuracy but also with precision. Some strategies that have been helpful to second graders when approaching double digit addition can be found below. These strategies include “skip jumping by 10s”,  getting to a “friendly number” also known as a “decade” or “a multiple of ten”, and finally the “sharing strategy” where you can borrow from either number to make your addition easier. While it can be tempting to teach your child a “shortcut” or “shorthand” method for multi-digit addition, please encourage them to use the strategies that we have learned in class as they will support a deep understanding of the relationship between numeracy, operations, and place value.

Writer’s Workshop: Our poets are working hard. We continue to learn about structure while expanding our work to include decisions to strengthen meaning.

Word Study: In Unit 5 students have the chance to flex their word study muscles by working comfortably with the closed syllable type and suffix endings. In addition we are practicing combining syllables to form multisyllabic words. This unit focuses primarily on combining two closed syllables together to make one longer word. This concept connects well to the work we’ve been doing in Readers’ Workshop. In addition to this work students have been introduced to new suffix endings (-ful, -ment, -ish, -ness, -less, -able, and -en). Finally we have learned two new vowel teams au like in the word August and aw like in the word saw.

Readers’ Workshop: There is so much to learn about decoding words! Second graders have worked hard to learn how to tackle longer words. Here are the most recent reminders & syllable division patterns we’ve worked on!

Second Step with Ms. Betsy: This week second graders met with Betsy Lloyd, our school counselor for the second lesson in our protection unit. This week's lesson focused on safety, and how to keep yourself safe. In this lesson, students learned about the never never rule, which highlighted a variety of things students should never do, like not wearing a seatbelt. Students also learned about the always always rule, which teaches students to always ask a trusted adult before going somewhere, doing something or accepting something from someone.

Hour of Code: Our second grade squad celebrated hour of code this week! Hour of code is an international celebration of computer science education week. We explored and celebrated coding through Kodable, an educational app dedicated to teaching students about foundational concepts of code.

Theme (Crafts):This week our second grade squad read The Mitten Tree by Candace Christiansen. We learned how simple acts of kindness can speak louder than words. Afterwards we created our own mittens to spread beauty and joy. Take a look at our designs!

Our most recent Quiet Time vacations were New Zealand in Oceania and France in Europe.
