  • There are still a few spots remaining if you would like to volunteer to lead a Pease Mountain hike. Here is the Pease Mountain sign up! Please make sure to read the top section before you sign up. We would love to offer a few winter hikes. Thank you!’

  • The Charlotte Grange will be hosting the “My Favorite Tree in Charlotte” art show this Saturday, check out the flier below for more details.

Math: Did you know an army ant is about one centimeter long? Did you also know that army ant swarms may be as wide as 14 meters? WOW! Your second grader is learning about army ants as a platform to work with centimeters and meters. Earlier this year we learned about customary units (inches, feet, and yards) and now we are exploring metric units (centimeters and meters).

Word Study: This week students continued their investigation of double vowel (d) syllables. We have moved to the second row of our vowel teams anchor chart. This row includes the vowel combinations that make the long e sound. Our class learned when to use these combinations and practiced reading and writing words that had mixed syllable types. Check out the vowel team anchor chart below!

Writers’ Workshop: We have been working to write with our audience in mind! Second graders are continuing to work with their information writing checklist and anchor charts to teach their audience about their topic. This week our squad traded drafts with a partner. While reading each other's pieces, students generated some questions about their partner’s topic and left sticky notes in the places they wanted to know more about. This strategy helped us push our thinking and writing to the next level.

Readers’ Workshop: As we work with bigger books, we’ve learned that authors often use playful and inventive language. It is up to the reader to push themselves to make sure they understand what the language really means. We’ve had fun working with this special language! Our next group of lessons will be focused on maintaining comprehension as we read longer books.

SEL/Theme: We have begun our fourth, and final, Second Step unit. In this unit, students will learn a process for solving problems with others in a positive way. This week’s lesson focused on the first step of this process: Say the problem without blame. Students learned that saying the problem by starting with ‘I want/I need’ is often a way to say the problem without blame.

Science: This week our geologists continued their exploration of Pebbles, Sand and Silt. Students worked with the question: How can rocks be separated by size? They used a new tool, the screen, to work with their group to separate sand, pebbles and gravel.

Quiet Time: Our students have ‘traveled’ far these past two weeks!

Here are some photos from our classroom adventures!
