Math: Our mathematicians have been busy solving, and writing, story problems! Second graders are using ants as characters in these story problems. Our squad also spent time practicing common strategies they can use to solve addition and subtraction problems. Take a look at the strategies below!
Math Moments: Hey second grade families! Are you looking for a fun and productive way to incorporate math into your child’s everyday life? Occasionally you will find ideas to consider in our classroom blog, they will be under the section titled, “Math Moments”.
This week’s Math Moment is all about money. Students have been working with money throughout the year; identifying coins and their values. Recently we have been calculating cost and change. We recommend “play shopping” to give your child practice calculating the total cost of 2-3 objects and then figuring out what their change would be.
Word Study: This week we wrapped up Unit 11 of FUNdations. This unit focused on the “D” syllable with 3 new combinations; ee, ea, and ey. All three combinations make the long e sound and can often be found in homophones such as dear and deer or heal and heel. Students practiced using the spelling options procedure to find the correct spelling of words when the long e sound happens at the middle or end of a word. This type of spelling takes practice and students can strengthen their spelling skills by reading and noticing words with the “D” Syllable. For more information on this unit, check out our blog side-panel.
Writers’ Workshop: Check out the flier for our upcoming Information Writing Celebration! We hope to see you there!
Readers’ Workshop: We wrapped up our unit focused on fluency, literary language, and keeping track of longer books! Second graders have begun our next unit focused on series books! During our first bend, students will focus on becoming experts on characters. As a class, we are focusing on the Frog and Toad series by Arnold Lobel as we explore strategies for reading series books like experts!
SEL/Theme: During our Second Step lesson this week, second graders continued to learn how to solve problems using ‘S’ - say the problem without blame ‘T’ - think of solutions that are safe and respectful, ‘E’ - explore consequences, and ‘P’ - pick the best solution. Students will continue to practice their calm down strategies and problem solving strategies. This week, we worked to problem solve after we hurt someone’s feelings. Second graders worked to use the STEP method to take responsibility for their actions and make amends.
In celebration of Arab American Heritage month we were introduced to Etel Adnan and created two different landscape artworks inspired by her artwork. We also learned that she was a poet, novelist, spoke five languages and wrote in three languages!
Science: Our young geologists just wrapped up an exciting unit on Pebbles, Sand, and Silt, where they explored Earth’s materials through hands-on investigation and inquiry. In Session 6, students examined sand collected from a previous activity and discovered that not all sand particles are the same size. After shaking a vial of sand and water, they noticed the water became cloudy—leading them to a new question: Is there a material smaller than sand? With careful observation, they discovered silt, a fine particle that settles above the sand and makes water appear murky. In Session 7, students reflected on everything they had learned—from identifying layers of Earth materials to understanding that rocks, sand, and silt are natural resources used in the world around us. They proudly completed their notebooks, shared discoveries, and celebrated their growth as scientists with a final word search. What an incredible journey of discovery, observation, and critical thinking!
Quiet Time: Our students have ‘traveled’ far these past two weeks!
