Charlotte Central School’s production of Willy Wonka Jr. is just around the corner! Join us June 5–7 at 6:30 PM for an evening of musical magic, student artwork, and community celebration. Tickets are on sale now ($10 adults, $5 students, free for children younger than kindergarten), and proceeds will support our Stage Revitalization Campaign. Visit the full event newsletter for details on performances, ticket options, and how to support our theater program.
Math: Our mathematicians continue to focus on adding and subtracting with three digit numbers. We had a great time playing the game ‘Sum It Up.’ This is a fun game that can be played at home! Here are the directions. (You can improvise the more/less dice and use blank paper for the record sheet.)
Word Study: We are continuing to work with the D-syllable (vowel teams), focusing on the spelling of the long o sound /ō/. Second graders worked with when to use spelling different spelling options based on whether or not the sound exists in the beginning, middle, or end of a word or syllable.
Writers’ Workshop: We have begun our final writing unit of second grade! During this unit our focus will be on sentence structure with the majority of our work dedicated to writing in complete sentences. Students will decide what genre they want to apply these skills to! Students are choosing to write comic strips, fiction stories, narratives, opinion pieces, and more!
Readers’ Workshop: As we wrap up our unit devoted to series books, students are learning ways to share books they love with others. Our hope is that our students will have lots of recommendations from each other to read over the summer!
SEL/Theme: In Second Step second graders have been using STEP to think about how to solve problems respectfully, safely, and efficiently. We are working to use this problem solving method throughout our day.
Second graders have continued to celebrate Asian American Pacific Islander Heritage Month by listening to different read alouds and learning about, and being inspired by, Hawaiian artist Alisha Kahealani Mahone-Brooks. Science: Our scientists have been learning about the scientific method while observing plants. Students learned that a plant needs soil, air, water, and sunlight to survive. We then devised experiments that took away one of these needs. We have been observing our plants carefully to see how they are doing!
Quiet Time: Our students have ‘traveled’ far these past two weeks!
