Reminders:
We’ve completed the NexTrex challenge by collecting 1,000 pounds of plastic! As a result, our school will get a composite bench to add to our outdoor space. Please note that our last school-based collection date was this past week. Therefore, if you and your family would like to continue this great recycling work, please consider dropping off your plastic at the Charlotte Town Library and/or most local grocery stores. Thank you for your support!
The warm weather has arrived! Please support your child to have a water bottle at school everyday.
No school on Monday, Mary 26, 2025 in observance of Memorial Day.
Math: Over the past two weeks, students have worked to write and solve story problems! We had fun sharing our story problems with each other and solving the work of our squad mates!
Word Study: In word study our second graders have wrapped up unit 12 and begun unit 13. Unit 13 introduces us to the next row in our Vowel Teams Poster. Our squad now knows 3 more ways to make the long o sound, oa, oe, and ow. We worked on hearing words with the long o sound then tapping them out to decide whether the vowel is in the beginning, middle, or end of the syllable/word. Next we practiced using the spelling options procedure to decide which option is the correct spelling of the word. Check out some of our slides from this week!
Writers’ Workshop: What a celebration! Second graders loved sharing their information writing with the greater CCS community!
Readers’ Workshop: During readers’ workshop, students have continued to focus on reading series books and becoming experts on characters. This week, we have started to work to become experts on the author of a series, discovering the craft techniques an author uses. This will not only help readers read the text more closely, it will also help them consider what an author is trying to show, the tone a scene evokes, and so forth.
SEL/Theme: In Second Step second graders have been using STEP to think about how to solve problems respectfully, safely, and efficiently. When students are able to use the Problem-Solving STEPs from Second Step independently, then they are able to have stronger relationships with their peers. This week we explored the idea of playing fairly on the playground. Negotiating and deciding on rules for playground play can be a constructive and successful process for second graders when they use the STEPs to guide them when a disagreement arises.
Science: Over the past two weeks in science, our second graders embarked on an exciting new unit all about the fascinating world of plants! The first two lessons laid the groundwork for understanding what keeps these living things thriving and how we can investigate their needs like real scientists. In last week’s lesson, our squad explored the essential elements that plants require to live and grow, such as sunlight, water, and nutrients, using a KWL chart to organize their learning. Building on this, this week’s lesson introduced the fundamental steps of scientific inquiry, guiding students to make predictions (hypotheses) about what might happen if a plant doesn't get what it needs. Together, these lessons not only built foundational knowledge about plant life but also sparked curiosity and developed early scientific thinking skills in a hands-on and engaging way.
Quiet Time: Our students have ‘traveled’ far these past two weeks!
