Friday, November 21, 2025

Reminders:

  • There will be no school on Monday, November 24 - Friday, November 28, 2025.

  • If you would like to volunteer to lead a Pease Mountain hike, please check out the Pease Mountain sign up. There are many slots for upcoming hikes available. We truly appreciate your time and support!

Cold Weather: Colder weather and snow flurries means it is time to bring snow gear! Please make sure you send your child to school with the following items. If you need any of the items, please reach out and we will find you what you need!

  • Outdoor Gear: Boots, jacket, snow pants, hat, gloves/mittens, extra socks.

    • Snow pants can stay in your child’s classroom all week. On Fridays we will send them home. Please go over your snow gear plan with your child.

    • IMPORTANT: LABEL ALL SNOW GEAR! Many items in second grade are identical to one another, labeling your child’s gear takes the guesswork out of what belongs to who.

  • Indoor shoes: Consider having your child leave a pair of “indoor shoes” in the classroom. That way they can wear their boots to and from school and have a comfortable pair of shoes to wear in the classroom.

Math: Our second graders have been having fun using unifix cubes to measure! Students have been working to attend to precision as they measure different objects.

Word Study: It has been so exciting to see and experience the connection between readers’ workshop and word study this week! This week we have been practicing finding, reading, building, writing, and marking-up words. A specific and special focus has been placed on base words and affixes. Affixes are additions to a base word that can clarify or change the meaning of the base word. In word study we have been focusing on suffixes and their meanings. Our squad has spelling single closed syllable words with suffixes: -s, -es, -ed, -er, -est, and -ing.

Readers’ Workshop: We have wrapped up our first bend in our ‘Power Up! Next Level Word Solving Skills’ unit. Students have been introduced to the six syllable types in the English Language as well as their exceptions. We have also introduced common prefixes & suffixes. In our next group of lessons, students will learn how to divide longer words into their syllables and apply what they have learned about syllables to read new words. Curiosity is key right now! In your child’s home school folder you will find the six syllable types. Our hope is that your child will see words and try to find some of the syllable types out in the world! Please note, they do not need to be decoding longer words with their new syllable knowledge - not yet anyway. This curiosity phase is critical to get the engagement and enthusiasm for our next group of lessons which will  focus on syllable division patterns. We are purposefully pausing here to allow kids time to interact with words around them and find different syllable types.

Writers’ Workshop: What a celebration! Second grade authors came together as a whole squad to celebrate the culmination of our narrative writing unit. There were many special CCS adults on hand to lead small groups as students shared their writing with one another.

We have begun our poetry writing unit! In the first bend, or group of lessons, we introduced students to the sounds and feelings of poetry. Poetry is so much more than writing words on a page. It is a deepening of observation and thought as we look at, and interact with, the world around us.

Science: This week, second graders wrapped up their investigation on the properties of household substances. Students worked with the vocabulary: matter, liquid, solid, gas, and dissolve.

SEL/Theme: This week’s lesson in Second Step focused on feeling confident. Students practiced identifying physical and situational clues that indicate the feeling of confidence. They also practiced noticing and detecting when their own or others’ feelings changed. Our class learned that practicing helps build confidence and feeling confident helps you do your best and makes you proud.

This week we also had a whole school wide Champ Treat celebration! Our second grade squad got together with the sixth grade for some fun read alouds.

Project: November is Native American Heritage Month. During our project block we learned about Jaune Quick-to-See Smith and created artwork inspired by her.

Quiet Time: We’ve traveled far these last two weeks!

Check out these photos from our past few weeks!
