Reminders:
Our Writing Celebration will take place on Tuesday, November 11th, from 7:30 to 8:15 a.m. Families are invited to stop by during that time to celebrate and enjoy their child’s writing!
There will be no school on Monday, November 24 - Friday, November 28, 2025.
If you would like to volunteer to lead a Pease Mountain hike, please check out the Pease Mountain sign up. There are many slots for upcoming hikes available. We truly appreciate your time and support!
Donation Request:
Cold season has arrived, and our classroom tissue supply is running low! If you’re able to donate a box (or two), we would be so grateful. Your support helps keep our second graders healthy and comfortable during the chilly months ahead.
Math: Mathematicians recently wrapped up their first unit, which focused on building a solid understanding of addition and subtraction within 20 and exploring how these two operations complement each other. We have now begun our second unit, Place Value & Measurement with Jack’s Beanstalks!
In this unit, second graders are exploring two- and three-digit numbers in a variety of hands-on ways. Students are modeling numbers using manipulatives and arrays to deepen their understanding of place value. They are practicing decomposing numbers into hundreds, tens, and ones, learning how to add by regrouping sets of tens and ones, and identifying numbers based on their component parts. We’ve also been writing numbers in both standard and expanded form.
Word Study: Last week in Word Study, we wrapped up Unit 2, which focused on closed syllables and glued sounds. This week, we began a combined Unit 3 and 4, where second graders are learning how to read, write, and mark up closed syllable exceptions. A closed syllable exception looks like a closed syllable (one vowel closed in by at least one consonant) but doesn’t sound like one. Instead of a short vowel sound, the vowel makes a long sound. There are five closed syllable exceptions, which we learned as special glued sounds—check them out below! We also began focusing on suffixes. A suffix is added to the end of a base word and can change its meaning. The suffixes we reviewed this week were -s and -es, which are used to make words plural.
Readers’ Workshop: We have been enjoying our ‘Power Up! Next Level Word Solving Skills’ unit! So far, students have learned about three syllable types & their exceptions: closed, r-controlled, and v-e. We have also discussed how to find a baseword in order to apply our decoding skills.
Science: Scientists were presented with a challenge to determine what household materials were used to make two mixtures. They began by conducting experiments on the four possible materials used: salt, baking soda, cornstarch, and sand. Students completed four experiments with each substance and recorded their observations. They then used their data to analyze our two unknown mixtures. Students were able to determine that mixture A was made up of cornstarch and sand while mixture B contained salt and baking soda!
SEL/Theme: We have begun our second unit in Second Step. This unit will focus on empathy. During our first two lessons, students worked to:
Name a variety of feelings
Distinguish between comfortable and uncomfortable feelings
Use physical, verbal, and situational clues to determine what others are feeling
Use physical, verbal, and situational clues to determine what others are feeling
Label their own feelings as the same as or different from others’ feelings
Quiet Time Vacations: We've traveled far these last two weeks!
