Reminders:
Water Bottle Reminder:Having a water bottle at school helps our Second Grade Squad stay hydrated and focused throughout the day. Some students bring their bottles home daily, while others keep them at school and take them home on Fridays to be washed. If your child does not currently have a water bottle at school, please be sure to send one in. If you need support getting a water bottle for your child, please reach out to your child’s classroom teacher, we are happy to help!
Donation request: Our classrooms are in need of tissues and cough drops. If you are able to make a donation to our squad, our noses and throats would appreciate it. 🙂
Save the date: Friday, March 13, 2026 Writing Celebration 7:30-8:15 AM.
Word Study: This week, our second graders learned how to apply the -dge/ge and -tch/ch spelling patterns!
Math: Our second grade mathematicians are continuing to work with the US Customary measurement system as they explore inches, feet, and yards. We have been focusing on:
Ratios/proportional reasoning exposure
Solving one and two-step addition and subtraction story problems
Adding three two-digit numbers
Estimate length in inches, feet, and yards
Writers’ Workshop: Our opinion writers are working hard! This week we began our third and final bend, or group of lessons. In this bend, students will work to incorporate all they have learned about opinion writings while focusing on language conventions in their authentic writing. We are looking forward to sharing our work with you and the greater CCS community at our Open House Writing Celebration on Friday, March 13th from 7:30-8:15 AM.
Readers’ Workshop: We are continuing to focus on strategies to support comprehension with an emphasis on nonfiction text. Students are growing knowledge across texts as they read topic sets of texts, comparing, contrasting, and connecting information across texts and text sets and doing the vocabulary work that accompanies nonfiction reading
Second Step: We are continuing to focus on strategies to support emotion management in our Second Step lessons. This week, students practiced managing anger by using counting to calm down and assertive communication skills to get what they want or need in response to scenarios. Students learned:
Everyone feels angry sometimes, but hurting other people’s feelings or bodies is not okay.
It’s important to calm down angry feelings so you don’t do something hurtful.
Being assertive is a respectful way to get what you want or need.
Science: It’s almost that time of year…. Maple sugaring time! This week marked the start of our next science unit focused on Maple Sugaring. Students explored the essential question, “How does the sugar maple help our state?” Our first lessons focused on:
Skills & Concepts:
I can identify a sugar maple tree.
I can sequence the steps to make maple syrup.
I can explain one way maple sugaring is different today than in the past.
I can explore one way maple sugaring may change in the future.
I can explain one way the sugar maple helps our state’s economy.
SEL/Theme: March is women’s history month and our second grade artists are celebrating by learning about important women around the world! In last week’s lesson we learned about Alma Thomas, an African American artist and teacher. Alma was inspired by nature and the world around her, especially all the colors of the world. Our class used pencil, and construction paper to create designs in the style of Alma Thomas.
Quiet Time: Our students have ‘traveled’ far these past two weeks!
