Reminders:
No school Friday, March 20, 2026 in observance of Eid-al-Fitr.
Second grade is hosting the next whole school assembly and you’re invited! If you are able, we’d love to see you on Friday, April 3, 2026 from 8:10-8:30 ish! Please sign in at the front office and go directly to the MPR.
March weather tends to ebb and flow. While some days feel warm and sunny, others can be much colder. Please make sure your child comes to school with appropriate outdoor gear so we can continue enjoying time outside.
During mud season, it is very helpful for students to have both indoor shoes and outdoor shoes. This helps prevent muddy messes in the classroom.
Word Study: We began our eighth unit in word study! During this unit, we introduced r-controlled syllables as a spelling pattern for second graders. We were excited to be reintroduced to “bossy r” from our previous reading unit, Power Up!, which emphasized using decoding strategies in reading. We learned the keywords and sounds that go with ar and or. (ar-car-/ar/, or-horn-/or/). Students were introduced to spelling patterns for or & ore. We reinforced the importance of hearing each part of a word when attempting to spell. We did some dictation practice to hear, decode, and encode (spell) the words that included ar and or.
Math: Over the last week and a half we’ve been having fun with JIM and the Giant! Ask your child who Jim is! Students have been exploring:
Ratios/proportional reasoning exposure
Solving one and two-step addition and subtraction story problems
Adding three two-digit numbers
Estimate length in inches, feet, and yards
Writers’ Workshop: What a celebration! Our second grade squad had a blast at last week’s writing celebration! They loved sharing their opinions with the greater CCS community!
Readers’ Workshop: We wrapped up our nonfiction reading unit! We are moving into our next reading unit, ‘Bigger Books Mean Amping Up Reading Power.’ This unit is broken into four bends, or groups of lessons. During our first bend, students are working to read with increased fluency. As we move into our second bend, our focus will be strategies for understanding literary language.
Science: We are learning to identify maple trees and in particular, the sugar maple tree! Throughout our sugar maple unit, we will be focusing on:
Skills & Concepts:
I can identify a sugar maple tree.
I can sequence the steps to make maple syrup.
I can explain one way maple sugaring is different today than in the past.
I can explore one way maple sugaring may change in the future.
I can explain one way the sugar maple helps our state’s economy.
SEL/Theme: This week we focused on learning about the artist Sonia Delaunay!
Quiet Time: Our students have ‘traveled’ far these past two weeks!
